India defeated New Zealand by four wickets on Saturday in the second T20 International match at Hagley Oval in Christchurch, taking a commanding 2-0 lead in the five-match series. Chasing a target of 181 runs, India reached 181 for 6 in 19.5 overs, sealing the win with just one ball to spare.

Earlier in the match, Indian captain Shreyas Iyer won the toss and elected to bowl first. The visiting pace attack quickly put pressure on the hosts, reducing New Zealand to 41 for 3 within the opening six overs. Arshdeep Singh dismissed Tim Seifert for seven runs, while Bhuvneshwar Kumar removed Daryl Mitchell for six. Prince Yadav also bowled Finn Allen, who scored 16 runs.

Despite the early setbacks, New Zealand recovered thanks to an impressive 116-run partnership for the fourth wicket between Glenn Phillips and Bevan Jacobs. Phillips anchored the innings with 70 runs off 43 deliveries, while Jacobs contributed significantly with a 40-ball 50 before eventually finishing with 58 runs according to match reports. Late hitting pushed the hosts to a competitive total of 180 for 5 in their allotted 20 overs. Arshdeep Singh finished with two wickets for India, while Bhuvneshwar, Prince, and Nitish Kumar Reddy claimed one wicket each.

In response, India experienced a turbulent run chase and found themselves in trouble at 70 for 5 after losing quick wickets. Mitchell Santner caused major problems for the visitors, claiming four wickets while conceding only 21 runs in his four overs, but his efforts were not enough to secure a victory for New Zealand.

India was rescued by an unbeaten partnership between Tilak Varma and Nitish Kumar Reddy. Varma played a crucial anchoring and finishing role, striking an unbeaten 51 runs off 26 balls. Reddy supported him with an aggressive, unbeaten 26 runs from 13 deliveries, guiding their team past the target with an unbroken 69-run stand for the seventh wicket.

For his standout performance with the bat and his crucial contributions, Tilak Varma was named player of the match. The victory follows India's four-wicket win in the opening match of the series, giving them solid momentum ahead of the third T20 fixture scheduled in Wellington.

In addition to his heroics with the bat, Varma also achieved a historic milestone during the first three overs of the New Zealand innings. By taking catches off the bowling of Arshdeep Singh and Bhuvneshwar Kumar, he set a new world record for the most catches taken by a fielder in men's T20 international cricket within a single calendar year, totaling 26 catches across 32 matches in 2026 and surpassing the previous record held by Indonesia's Danilson Hawo.
