India defeated New Zealand by four wickets on Thursday in the first Twenty20 international at Hagley Oval in Christchurch, pulling off the highest successful run chase in their T20 history. Chasing a formidable target of 226, India reached 230-6 with two balls remaining to take a 1-0 lead in the five-match series.

New Zealand had posted their highest-ever T20 score against India on home soil, finishing their innings at 225-4. Glenn Phillips led the charge for the hosts with an unbeaten 82 from 40 balls, while opening batter Finn Allen contributed 45 and Bevon Jacobs added 31 in a strong batting performance that put the Indian bowling attack under heavy pressure.

In response, India opened the innings aggressively despite having arrived in New Zealand only on Tuesday. Sanju Samson played a whirlwind knock of 67 from 33 balls, reaching his half-century in just 23 deliveries. Supported by Abhishek Sharma, who scored 29 from 12 balls, the opening pair put together a blistering 93-run partnership in just 5.5 overs, giving India 94 runs at the end of the powerplay.

New Zealand fought back in the middle overs after introducing spin. Michael Bracewell dismissed Sharma, and Mitchell Santner removed Samson, triggering a brief collapse that slowed India's momentum and left the visitors at 122-4. Captain Shreyas Iyer and Axar Patel then steadied the innings with a 45-run partnership for the fifth wicket to keep the chase on track.

As the match neared its conclusion, Naman Dhir delivered a decisive performance under pressure, scoring an unbeaten 42 from 15 balls at a strike rate of 280. Needing eight runs from the final over bowled by Matt Henry, Dhir hit a boundary off the first ball and secured the victory with a six over the deep fine leg fence.

Reflecting on the victory, Indian captain Shreyas Iyer praised the team's composure. "When you are just in the moment when the match has been won, I think whatever contributions you make it always feels good to end up on the winning side," Player of the Match Sanju Samson said after the game.

New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner acknowledged that while the top order performed well and the team reached a competitive total, the bowling and fielding fell short in the closing stages. The second match of the series is scheduled to take place at Hagley Oval on Saturday.
