Hong Kong Open Underway With Action-Packed Matches and Star Players
Top tennis players compete in the 2026 Hong Kong Open as rising stars battle through challenging rounds.
The 2026 Hong Kong Open is well underway, running from November 2 to November 8, featuring a stacked field of competitors as the tennis season approaches its final events. Last year's champion, Victoria Mboko, was forced to withdraw from the tournament due to an injury, opening the door for a brand-new winner to claim the title.
Among the standout performers in the early rounds is Alexandra Eala, who secured a thrilling victory in the second round against Czech player Tereza Valentova. Eala fought through two tight sets, ultimately prevailing 6-4, 7-6, after narrowly escaping a fierce comeback in the second-set tiebreak. Commentator Mark Valledy noted the encounter as the match of the tournament.
Reflecting on her hard-fought win, Eala admitted during her post-match interview that she felt fortunate to advance. "It was so tough; it was really, really tough. I think Tereza played incredibly, and we were able to bring the match to a really high level. I think that was reflected on the scores, so I'm really happy with that win. I think I escaped a little bit," Eala stated.
With this victory, Eala advances to the quarter-finals to face Croatia's Antonia Ruzic. Ruzic advanced following her round-of-16 match against China's Wang Xinyu. Should Eala continue her run, she could potentially face players like Maria Sakkari or Aliaksandra Sasnovich in the semifinals.
The tournament also saw notable performances from younger athletes, including 17-year-old British player Mika Stojsavljevic. Entering the main draw as a lucky loser with only an hour's notice, Stojsavljevic pulled off a major upset by defeating former Australian Open champion Sofia Kenin. However, her run came to an end in the last 16, where she was defeated in straight sets by Turkey's Zeynep Sonmez with a score of 7-6 (7-5), 6-4.
Sonmez's victory moves her forward to a quarter-final matchup against Claire Liu. Meanwhile, the tournament's top seed, Sorana Cirstea, continues her campaign in what is reportedly her final tournament appearance before retirement, adding high stakes to the competition.
The tournament will conclude with the final match on Sunday, November 8, crowning the new champion of the 2026 edition.
