Harriet Dart captured the first WTA Tour singles title of her career on Sunday in Guangzhou, China, overcoming a set deficit to defeat Austria's Lilli Tagger 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the final. The 30-year-old Briton completed a dream week at the tournament after navigating through the qualifying rounds.

Dart's journey to the championship match proved dramatic from the start. In her opening qualifying match against world number 632 Shek Ying Cheuk, she came dangerously close to elimination when she trailed by a set and a break. Once in the main draw, Dart played exclusively three-set matches, defeating Tatiana Prozorova, Janice Tjen, Paula Badosa, and Xinran Sun before facing Tagger in the final.

In the semifinal round against Sun Xinran, Dart avoided elimination by saving three match points. During the final against the 18-year-old Tagger, Dart dropped the opening set before mounting her comeback. She broke her opponent's serve in the second set to level the match and ultimately sealed the victory on her own serve in the decider after a series of breaks.

Following her breakthrough victory, Dart expressed deep emotion in her post-match speech while praising her teenage opponent. "I'll try not to get too emotional," Dart said. "Firstly Lilli, you're so young and you have a huge career ahead of you. Congratulations for not only an amazing week but an amazing year, I have no doubt that you will win so many titles, so well done to you and your team for all your amazing work."

Dart also thanked her support network, including her family, her boyfriend Stephen, fitness coach Dario, and her coach, former Wimbledon champion Marion Bartoli. The title win marks a major milestone in Dart's career and brings a significant boost to her ranking.

Having been ranked outside the top 200 at this time last year, Dart is set to climb 32 spots in the world rankings to number 83. This new ranking secures her direct entry into the main draw of next year's Australian Open, a feat she has not accomplished at any Grand Slam since the 2024 US Open.

With this victory, Dart becomes the sixth British female player to win a WTA singles title since the year 2000, joining a select group that includes Heather Watson, Johanna Konta, Katie Boulter, Emma Raducanu, and Sonay Kartal.
