Holiday Shopping and Festivities Ramp Up for the 2026 Season

Retailers and cities prepare for the winter holidays with new countdown calendars, festive lights, and seasonal displays.

As the winter holiday season approaches, communities and retailers are rolling out elaborate festive preparations, highlighted by the popularity of specialty countdown items. Among the sought-after holiday merchandise, the Pokémon Advent calendar featuring Funko Pocket Pop mini-figurines has seen strong demand after receiving a price reduction on Amazon, dropping to 24.99 euros from 30 euros. Collectors and young fans alike are rushing to secure the officially licensed product, which includes 24 mystery figures hidden behind doors that double as a display backdrop.

Beyond retail items, municipalities are launching large-scale holiday programs to boost local commerce and attract visitors. In Caen, Mayor Aristide Olivier unveiled an expanded holiday schedule for 2026, increasing the city's festive budget from 400,000 euros to 650,000 euros. The city plans to illuminate its streets with three times as many glittering decorations as last year, spanning 18 kilometers of garlands, while offering free public transportation and parking over four consecutive weekends to facilitate downtown access.

Caen's celebrations will feature multiple new attractions, including a winter terrace dubbed 'Vaka' next to a 15-meter-tall Christmas tree, a giant Ferris wheel relocated to the port, and a traditional Advent calendar revealed every evening at 6:30 p.m. Additionally, the Saint-Sauveur church will be transformed into a magical lantern featuring animated story projections created locally, running from December 4 through December 31.

Community-led holiday traditions are also taking shape in smaller towns. In Barbazan, the local Association Solidarité Commingeoise, in partnership with the municipality and the Idéal 31 association, is organizing a life-sized community Advent calendar for 2026. From December 1 through December 24, residents across the village will decorate 24 houses, gates, and entryways using recyclable or natural materials, inviting children and families to search for the visible numbers throughout the neighborhood.

In the commercial sector, brands are investing heavily in creative marketing campaigns to showcase their holiday collections. Perfume brand Adopt partnered with studio Fantasmagorie for its 2026 holiday launch, producing a 45-second cinematic spot directed by Tom Bartowicz. The commercial depicts an actress opening an Advent calendar and stepping into a miniature, handmade Parisian world that combines physical sets, 3D effects, and artificial intelligence to highlight various seasonal product lines.

High-end culinary institutions are similarly expanding their holiday offerings with elaborate artisan creations. French house Lenôtre introduced its signature 2026 yule log, 'Le Village enneigé,' designed by pastry world champion Étienne Leroy. Priced at 190 euros for a 2.1-kilogram dessert serving six people, the chocolate masterpiece features a cluster of sculpted alpine chalets with marshmallow snow roofs, accompanied by a collection of other holiday logs and a dedicated Advent calendar.
