Consumer Protection Agency Warns of Risks Ahead of El Buen Fin 2026
As preparation ramps up for Mexico's premier retail event, authorities are advising shoppers to safeguard their purchases and document every transaction.
As preparations get underway for El Buen Fin 2026, Mexico's federal consumer protection agency, Profeco, has issued a formal warning regarding four distinct risks that shoppers face when making online purchases during the major retail campaign. The initiative remains the country's most significant shopping season, outdrawing other promotional periods like the Hot Sale and Black Friday.
According to a recent consumer study by Ipsos, approximately 90% of Mexican consumers typically make purchases during El Buen Fin, driven largely by direct discounts and financing options. While credit remains the primary engine of spending—with about 8 in 10 shoppers utilizing credit facilities—the surge in digital transactions also brings logistical and operational challenges.
Profeco highlighted that one of the most common pitfalls occurs when a product's price suddenly changes right at the moment of payment. In its November consumer publication, the agency cited an instance where an advertised discounted television abruptly reverted to a much higher price during checkout. Officials stress that if a promotion is valid, retailers are legally obligated to respect the advertised cost.
Another major concern involves online stores canceling orders after payment has already been processed, usually citing sudden inventory shortages. Additionally, some consumers experience situations where tracking systems mark packages as successfully delivered, even though the merchandise never arrived at their homes. Finally, authorities cautioned against deals that seem excessively generous, advising buyers to thoroughly verify the identity of unknown online sellers before transferring funds.
To counter these potential hazards, regulatory officials strongly encourage consumers to collect and save digital evidence. This includes taking screenshots of advertised prices, product features, and promotional terms, as well as keeping all purchase confirmations, order numbers, and communication logs with vendors.
"Saving evidence is one of the best tools you have as a consumer," the agency noted in its consumer guidance. Shoppers facing unresolved disputes can seek assistance through official consumer helplines or contact the regulatory body via email for guidance on filing formal complaints.
Beyond digital safety concerns, retailers are also facing technological pressures to ensure smooth operations. Industry experts note that heavy traffic during high-demand events like El Buen Fin and Black Friday can expose vulnerabilities in automated systems and inventory management, making data resilience and rapid recovery critical for businesses handling millions of transactions.
