Holger Rune Secures First ATP Tour Victory Since Returning From Injury in Basel

Holger Rune claimed his first ATP Tour victory since returning from a severe Achilles tendon injury, defeating France's Quentin Halys in the opening round of the Swiss Indoors in Basel. The hard-fought match concluded with scores of 6-4, 6-7, 7-6, lasting over two and a half hours on the indoor hard courts.

The victory marks a significant turning point for Rune, who had struggled to find his footing on the ATP circuit following a nearly year-long absence. After tearing his Achilles tendon at a tournament in Stockholm last year, the former world number four returned to competition in September, securing two victories while representing Denmark in the Davis Cup.

However, his subsequent appearances in Asia yielded opening-round exits in Tokyo and Shanghai, where he fell to Kyrian Jacquet and Daniel Altmaier respectively. He also withdrew from the ATP 250 event in Brussels prior to arriving in Basel, sliding down the rankings to the 1205th spot.

His opponent in Basel, Quentin Halys, entered the tournament at a career-best ranking of 45th and put up a formidable fight. Halys showcased a powerful service game throughout the contest, firing an impressive 32 aces past the Danish player.

After dropping the first set, Halys fought back to claim the second set in a tiebreak, winning it 7-2. The decider proved equally tense, forcing another tiebreak to separate the two competitors.

With the score deadlocked at 5-5 in the final tiebreak, Halys committed a crucial double fault that handed Rune a match point. Capitalizing on the opportunity, Rune executed a brilliant drop shot to seal the hard-earned victory and advance to the round of 16.

Prior to this encounter, Rune had held a historical head-to-head advantage over Halys, having beaten the French player at Wimbledon in 2024 and Roland-Garros in 2025. This latest meeting marked their first-ever clash on a hard surface.
