Carlos Alcaraz Outlasts Nikoloz Basilashvili to Reach Vienna Open Quarterfinals
The Spanish star saved four set points in a grueling tiebreak to book a matchup with Tommy Paul.
Carlos Alcaraz advanced to the quarterfinals of the Erste Bank Open in Vienna on Thursday after surviving an intense second-set battle against Nikoloz Basilashvili. The 23-year-old Spaniard, currently ranked third in the world, clinched a 6-1, 7-6(11) victory in one hour and 40 minutes at the Wiener Stadthalle. The hard-fought triumph booked him a quarterfinal encounter with American Tommy Paul and extended his winning streak in ATP 500-level tournaments to 23 consecutive matches.
The match unfolded as a tale of two distinct sets. Alcaraz overwhelmed his Georgian opponent during an almost flawless opening frame, dictating play with his forehand and inventive shot-making to secure the set 6-1. Basilashvili, who entered the main draw fresh off a runner-up finish in Almaty, struggled to counter the Spaniard's precision early on before settling into the rhythm of the indoor surface.
However, Basilashvili refused to fade quietly in the second set. Unleashing his signature high-risk, heavy-hitting baseline power, the Georgian rallied to level the set after dropping an early break and withstood two break points at 4-5 to force a high-stakes tiebreak. Basilashvili seized momentum early in the breaker, taking a 4-1 lead and eventually earning four set points. Showing composure under pressure, Alcaraz neutralized each opportunity before sealing victory on his fourth match point to conclude an 18-minute tiebreak.
The triumph marked Alcaraz's 60th career ATP Tour quarterfinal and continued his dominant form in ATP 500 competitions. His unbeaten run in the tournament category stretches back to the final of the 2025 Barcelona Open, where he fell to Denmark's Holger Rune while managing physical discomfort. Alcaraz is making only his second career appearance in the Austrian capital, having previously reached the semifinals during his tournament debut back in 2021.
Earlier in the week, Alcaraz opened his campaign with another gritty performance, defeating Russian Karen Khachanov 6-4, 7-6(5) in a little over two hours. Against Khachanov, Alcaraz won 80 percent of his first-serve points and navigated a tight finish after his opponent saved three match points at 5-4 in the second set. The Spaniard is pursuing his fourth tour-level trophy of the season, having already captured titles at the Australian Open, Doha, and Tokyo.
Standing between Alcaraz and a semifinal berth is seventh-seeded Tommy Paul, who produced a clinical display earlier Thursday. The 29-year-old American routed Italy's Luciano Darderi 6-1, 6-1 in just 48 minutes. Paul entered Vienna in solid form, having recently reached the quarterfinals at the Shanghai Masters and the semifinals at the Lyon Open, and remains in contention to secure a year-end top-10 ranking and a potential spot at the ATP Finals.
Alcaraz holds a commanding 7-2 lead over Paul in their head-to-head series, having won their last six encounters. Their most recent battles took place at Grand Slam tournaments this season, with Alcaraz claiming straight-sets victories in the fourth round of both the Australian Open and the US Open. Although Paul captured two of their initial three meetings at the Canadian Open in 2022 and 2023, the upcoming clash in Vienna will represent the first time the two players face each other on an indoor hard court.
The quarterfinal matchup between Alcaraz and Paul is scheduled for Friday afternoon on the Centre Court at the Wiener Stadthalle. The winner could potentially cross paths in Saturday's semifinals with Daniil Medvedev, who reached the final eight after fighting off a match point against Britain's Cameron Norrie. Medvedev faces French veteran Adrian Mannarino in the earlier quarterfinal match on the same court.
