Carlos Alcaraz Returns to the Vienna Open After a Five-Year Absence
The world number three secured a hard-fought opening victory against Karen Khachanov as he ramps up his competitive schedule following an injury layoff.
Carlos Alcaraz made his long-awaited return to the Vienna Open on Tuesday, competing at the Austrian ATP 500 tournament for the first time in half a decade. Playing as the second seed following a late wildcard entry, the Spanish star faced a tough opening test against Russia's Karen Khachanov on the indoor hard courts.
Alcaraz managed to navigate past Khachanov in straight sets, winning 6-4, 7-6(5), although the match proved to be a challenging battle. After taking the first set, Alcaraz faced stiff resistance in the second set as Khachanov pushed him to a tiebreak before the Spaniard ultimately secured the victory.
The decision to enter the Vienna tournament came after a scheduling change prompted by the postponement of the Six Kings Slam in Riyadh. Having competed less frequently than usual this season following a four-to-five-month absence due to a right wrist injury, Alcaraz explained that he needed more match rhythm and tournament continuity to reach his peak form.
"I haven’t played many tournaments this year. I need competition, tournaments and match rhythm to recover my best level," Alcaraz said during his pre-tournament press conference. "I am happy with the way I play and with my current level, but I feel like I’m not 100% yet."
Reflecting on his previous appearance in Vienna back in 2021, when he reached the semifinals as a rising teenager, Alcaraz expressed a sense of nostalgia. Now holding three Grand Slam titles and ranking third in the world, he noted that despite the significant journey and achievements over the past five years, his ambition and passion for the sport remain entirely unchanged.
During his time in the Austrian capital, Alcaraz also took the opportunity to praise fellow competitor Alexander Zverev, who recently ascended to the world number one ranking. Lauding Zverev's physical endurance and steady performance across the entire calendar, Alcaraz called the German's status as the top-ranked player "more than deserved" and admitted that he misses facing top rivals like Zverev and Jannik Sinner on tour.
Looking ahead beyond the tournament in Vienna, Alcaraz's demanding end-of-season schedule will include the Paris Masters, the ATP Finals in Turin, and the Davis Cup Final 8 in Bologna. Spain's Davis Cup captain, David Ferrer, has confirmed Alcaraz's spot on the national roster for the upcoming team showdown in Italy.
Addressing his status as a role model and the expectations surrounding him, Alcaraz emphasized that he does not feel weighed down by pressure. Instead, he focuses on maintaining a positive attitude both on and off the court, particularly after navigating the mental and physical hurdles of his lengthy injury recovery earlier in the year.
