Hertha BSC Appeals Million-Euro Judgment In Dispute With Fredi Bobic

While Hertha continues its ongoing legal battle in Berlin, speculation surrounding a potential return to the Bundesliga for the former executive has cooled down.

Hertha BSC has taken its ongoing legal battle with former managing director Fredi Bobic to the next stage by appealing a major financial ruling at the Berlin Kammergericht. The multi-million-euro dispute, which has already lasted two and a half years, involves a conditional judgment previously issued by the Berlin Regional Court in late September. That ruling ordered the club to pay Bobic a gross amount of 3.35 million euros, alongside interest that could push the total financial obligation past four million euros, in addition to covering procedural costs.

A spokesperson for the court confirmed that the appeal will examine whether the initial judgment stemmed from a legal error or if the underlying facts support an alternative decision. Even if the court rejects the appeal, the prolonged legal conflict could still trigger subsidiary proceedings functioning as a standard civil lawsuit where all forms of evidence are admissible.

The legal standoff originated from multiple lawsuits filed by Bobic following his ordinary and extraordinary dismissals from the club. While the Regional Court previously ruled in favor of Bobic regarding his challenge to the extraordinary termination, Hertha's subsequent appeal of that decision was dismissed by the Kammergericht, though the club retains the option to file a non-admission complaint with the Federal Court of Justice.

Outside of the courtroom, Bobic recently drew attention amid rumors linking him to a potential return to Eintracht Frankfurt, where he previously worked as sporting director between 2016 and 2021. Speculation arose as Eintracht prepares for a leadership transition following reports regarding the departure of current board member for sports Markus Kroesche. During a televised appearance, Bobic joked about a potential comeback to the club, fueling media discussion about his future.

However, reports from German media outlets indicate that Frankfurt ultimately decided to pursue other candidates for the executive position. While names such as Christoph Spycher of BSC Young Boys, Joti Chatzialexiou of 1. FC Nuernberg, and Horst Heldt emerged on prospective shortlists, reports from Sport1.de noted that the club's board shifted its focus away from Bobic.

Consequently, Bobic remains in his current role at Polish club Legia Warsaw, and discussions regarding a potential move back to the Bundesliga have effectively closed for the time being. As both his former club in Berlin navigates the appeals process and Frankfurt pursues alternative leadership strategies, Bobic continues his managerial duties in Warsaw.
