Lionel Messi Escapes MLS Suspension Thanks to Good Behavior Rule
The Inter Miami star avoided a one-match suspension after receiving his fifth yellow card of the season, benefiting from a league disciplinary provision.
Inter Miami forward Lionel Messi avoided a one-match suspension despite collecting his fifth yellow card of the regular season during a 2-2 draw against FC Cincinnati. Although receiving five bookings typically triggers an automatic suspension under Major League Soccer guidelines, Messi remained eligible to play thanks to the league's Good Behavior Incentive.
The disciplinary rule automatically reduces a player's yellow-card accumulation total by one whenever they appear in five consecutive matches without receiving a booking, red card, or supplemental discipline. According to reports from The Athletic and British newspaper The Sun, Messi had successfully triggered this provision twice during the campaign after extended sequences without a caution.
While all five yellow cards remain part of his official disciplinary record, the deductions reduced his working accumulation total to just three. Consequently, the Argentine star stayed available for Inter Miami's penultimate regular-season fixture against the New England Revolution.
In that crucial matchup, Inter Miami secured a dramatic 2-1 comeback victory over New England. After a scoreless first half, Dániel Gazdag put the home side ahead in the 53rd minute by converting an assist from Ilay Feingold.
Inter Miami mounted a swift response in the second half. In the 69th minute, Germán Berterame leveled the score at 1-1 by heading in a pass from Messi. The partnership struck again in the 83rd minute when Messi fired a left-footed shot from the center of the area into the net following an assist from Telasco Segovia.
Late drama unfolded as Inter Miami defender Ian Fray scored an own goal in the 87th minute to narrow the deficit for New England. However, a subsequent potential equalizer by the home side was overturned by the video assistant referee (VAR) in the 89th minute.
Withstanding late pressure and six minutes of stoppage time, Inter Miami preserved their narrow lead. The victory lifted the club to 59 points, allowing them to surpass New England in the Eastern Conference standings as both teams prepare for the upcoming MLS playoffs.
