Future of The Walking Dead: Dead City Uncertain as Cast Joins New Projects
With main actors signing on for other television shows, the future of AMC's spinoff remains unconfirmed as franchise leadership looks ahead.
The future of The Walking Dead: Dead City remains unconfirmed by AMC, with two of its three main actors recently signing on for other television projects. While the network has not made any public statements regarding a potential fourth season, the scheduling commitments of the primary cast have raised questions among fans and industry observers about the continuation of the spinoff series.
Series lead Lauren Cohan, who portrays Maggie Rhee, has joined the cast of the Amazon Prime Video horror thriller series Stillwater in a regular role. Filming for the project is scheduled to take place in the Atlanta area from December through April. Meanwhile, Logan Kim, who plays Maggie's son Hershel, has signed onto a Netflix series titled Pagans. Jeffrey Dean Morgan, who stars alongside Cohan as Negan, has also been involved with Prime Video's Sterling Point, which received a second-season renewal that could expand his role.
Although actors frequently juggle multiple television projects in the era of shorter episode counts, the lack of an official renewal announcement from AMC after more than a month has created uncertainty. Scott M. Gimple, the chief content officer of The Walking Dead Universe, addressed the show's prospects in a recent interview, acknowledging that while it has a good chance of renewal, the television landscape has changed significantly due to streaming.
The third season of Dead City received positive reception from viewers and critics, who praised it as a notable improvement over previous installments. Although the season finale included setups that could lead into a future storyline, it could also function as a series finale if the network decides against a renewal.
A potential cancellation of Dead City would carry broader implications for the long-running television franchise. With other spinoffs like The Ones Who Live concluding after a single season and Daryl Dixon heading toward its fourth and final season in February 2027, Dead City is currently the only active spinoff with immediate potential for ongoing stories. Without a renewal, the franchise could face a significant gap in its broadcast history.
Despite these scheduling hurdles, AMC and franchise producers are actively planning the next chapter of the universe. Discussions include potential new shows, standalone projects, and shorter formats, alongside hopes for a future reunion or revival series featuring original stars Andrew Lincoln and Danai Gurira.
