The long-guarded secrets surrounding the final hours of Zoe Slater exploded during her wake in a newly released episode of the BBC soap opera "EastEnders." In the broadcast made available early on BBC iPlayer ahead of its evening airing on BBC One, the estranged wife of Max Branning, played by actor Jake Wood, publicly confronted him in front of grieving mourners. Cindy Beale denounced her husband as "a man of many secrets," sending shockwaves through the community gathered at The Queen Vic.

The dramatic confrontation stems from a series of events that began on a tumultuous evening in September. After suffering a heart attack during his wedding, Max discharged himself from the hospital with his marriage already in ruins. Seeking solace, he confessed his love to Linda Carter, portrayed by Kellie Bright, culminating in a heartfelt kiss in the alleyway behind The Queen Vic pub. Zoe, played by Michelle Ryan, unexpectedly witnessed the romantic encounter before retreating inside.

Following the encounter, Zoe rushed upstairs and collapsed onto her bed in severe agony after sustaining a head injury. Max followed her in an attempt to ensure she would keep the alleyway kiss confidential, but he could not decipher her slurred speech. Mistakenly assuming that Zoe was simply intoxicated, Max abandoned her in the bedroom and disregarded her desperate pleas to see her mother, Kat Moon. Zoe died hours later, leaving behind a recorded emergency call that confirmed an unidentified man had been present.

Zoe's sudden death ignited an intense quest for answers by Kat, played by Jessie Wallace. Distraught over the loss of her eldest daughter, Kat made it her personal mission to identify and confront the person who abandoned Zoe in her dying moments. Kat has repeatedly vowed retribution against the unknown individual, even expressing a desire to kill him once his identity is uncovered, unaware that the culprit standing in her midst was Max himself.

The truth began unraveling when Oscar Branning, portrayed by Pierre Counihan-Moullier, made a drunken error the previous week by disclosing Max's presence in Zoe's room to Cindy. Rather than alerting the family immediately, Cindy seized upon the revelation for financial gain. She attempted to blackmail Max, promising she would finalize their divorce paperwork and maintain total silence about Zoe's death if he paid her fifty thousand pounds to settle their affairs.

The emotional stakes intensified after Cindy and Kat ended up detained in a police holding cell together following an altercation with a police officer. Over the course of the night, a guilt-ridden Cindy listened as Kat openly shared her heartbreak over Zoe, while reflecting on Cindy's own past grief over the deaths of her children, Lucy and Steven. Although Cindy cryptically hinted that she possessed information regarding the mystery man, she retreated from confessing before the cell door opened.

After being released from custody, Kat hurried home and arrived at the church just in time to deliver an emotional tribute to Zoe. Grandchildren Jasmine Fisher and Josh Goodwin, played by Indeyarna Donaldson-Holness and Joshua Vaughan, joined Kat during the service. Following the memorial, the Slater family and fellow mourners reconvened at The Queen Vic pub, where Kat announced that drinks would be on the house to celebrate Zoe's memory.

The tense atmosphere inside the pub fractured when Max entered to confront Cindy, sparking an immediate quarrel between the estranged couple. The dispute was abruptly interrupted by a heavily intoxicated Lee Carter, played by Danny Hatchard, who stumbled in and attempted to defend Max. In his drunken outburst, Lee declared that Max was a decent man who was merely trying to support his family, directly revealing Max's involvement with Linda to the stunned patrons gathered inside.
