Ella Eyre Takes on Grueling Journey in BBC's Celebrity Race Across the World
The British singer-songwriter pairs up with her childhood friend for a phone-free trek from Borneo to Australia.
British singer-songwriter Ella Eyre has taken on a new challenge outside the recording studio, competing in the adventure reality series "Celebrity Race Across the World." Teaming up with her childhood friend Nana, the chart-topping artist is embarking on an arduous, multi-country trek that strips contestants of modern conveniences and tests their endurance, communication, and resourcefulness across thousands of miles.
The journey spans a grueling 7,500-kilometer (approximately 4,660-mile) route starting in Kuching, located in the Malaysian state of Sarawak on the island of Borneo. Contestants must navigate through five designated checkpoints across three nations and two separate continents, eventually reaching the finish line in Melbourne, Australia. Under the competition's strict guidelines, participants are completely cut off from smartphones, internet access, and credit cards, relying solely on cash budgets equivalent to standard travel fares and their own problem-solving skills.
For Eyre and Nana, who first met at school more than twenty years ago, the competition serves as a long-awaited substitute for an experience they never had when they were younger. Because neither took a traditional gap year after their studies, the pair entered the race eager to embrace unexpected adventures while counting on their lifelong bond to withstand the pressure. "There really aren’t that many people I could spend [several] weeks solidly with and still be able to laugh my head off," Eyre noted ahead of the journey. Nana echoed that optimism, jokingly warning their rivals, "We’re going to make a good team. I fear for our competitors."
The duo faces stiff competition from three other celebrity pairings taking on the same cross-continental trail. Veteran sports broadcaster Jeff Stelling has entered the race alongside his son, Matt. Social media personality Princess Andre and her musician brother, Junior Andre—both children of Peter Andre and Katie Price—are competing together to prove their independence. Rounding out the cast is Eurovision alum and singer Sam Ryder, who is traveling alongside Kaz, his longtime tour manager and trusted friend.
Eyre, born Ella McMahon in London, first captured international attention in 2013 when she provided powerhouse lead vocals on Rudimental’s smash drum-and-bass anthem "Waiting All Night." The track topped the charts and earned the Brit Award for British Single of the Year, instantly propelling her into the spotlight. A graduate of the BRIT School, Eyre quickly followed that success with her solo debut album, "Feline," which reached number four on the UK Albums Chart and featured hit singles like "If I Go" and "Comeback." Over the years, she has also collaborated with high-profile dance acts such as Sigala and Sigma while writing tracks for artists including Paloma Faith.
Her appearance on the television competition follows a period of profound personal and professional resilience. Eyre underwent vocal cord surgery during the 2020 pandemic lockdowns and subsequently navigated departures from two major record labels. Determined to retain creative independence, she reclaimed ownership of her master recordings and transitioned into releasing music independently, issuing introspective singles such as "hell yeah," "high on the internet," and "little things" ahead of her anticipated second studio album, "everything, in time."
The newest season of "Celebrity Race Across the World" broadcasts in the United Kingdom on BBC One and streams on BBC iPlayer, airing Wednesday evenings at 8 p.m. British Summer Time. The production remains exclusive to British television and regional streaming platforms, with no domestic broadcast yet announced for audiences in the United States, Canada, or Australia.
