French Firefighter Critically Injured in Shooting While Battling Blaze
The suspect, who allegedly intended to provoke police into killing him, has been detained following the incident in southern France.
A 53-year-old firefighter was critically wounded by gunfire while responding to a vehicle fire in southern France, according to recent updates from the Aix-en-Provence prosecutor's office. The incident occurred on the evening of November 1 in Plan-de-Campagne, located within the Bouches-du-Rhône department. While emergency crews were actively working to extinguish the flames, shots were fired directly at the personnel, striking the senior firefighter at close range in the thorax with buckshot.
The injured chief warrant officer was rushed to an emergency medical department in Marseille in a severe condition. However, updates provided by the director-general of civil security indicated that his condition had improved and turned reassuring. Following the initial attack, additional shots were fired toward the remaining rescue positions before the suspect barricaded himself behind an earthen mound.
The standoff ended when tactical police units intervened and arrested the 51-year-old suspect. Authorities recovered 53 rounds of ammunition from his pockets alongside 11 discharged 12-gauge cartridge casings found on the ground at the scene. The unemployed suspect had no prior criminal record but was reportedly under judicial supervision at the time of the offense for previous threats, weapon possession, and property damage.
During police custody, the suspect provided confused explanations regarding his actions. Prosecutors stated that the man intended to set fire to his own belongings and vehicles on the property while sparing a borrowed trailer where he lived, claiming that unnamed people wanted to take them from him. Furthermore, investigators revealed that the suspect wanted to commit suicide by forcing law enforcement officers to shoot him, admitting he fired through trees specifically to provoke return fire while denying any intent to commit murder.
Although family members suggested the man suffered from psychological issues, the public ministry did not formally confirm a psychiatric diagnosis, noting instead that he had lived for several years in precarious material conditions marked by social and familial estrangement. The prosecutor's office has requested that the suspect be placed in pre-trial detention as he faces multiple charges, including attempted homicide of professional firefighters in the line of duty, destruction of property by dangerous means, and illegal possession of weapons and ammunition.
In a separate development unrelated to the southern France shooting, authorities in Port Aransas, Texas, are investigating the death of Erin Marie Benavides. The 54-year-old American was found dead at her home from an apparent gunshot wound. Benavides previously drew international media attention in 2010 when she was linked to a high-profile scandal involving basketball player Tony Parker and actress Eva Longoria, which contributed to the dissolution of several marriages at the time. Following those events, she pursued a career as a prosecutor dealing with migrant trafficking cases and directed an organization providing shelter for isolated young women. Local officials confirmed that no third-party involvement is suspected in her death.
