A professional firefighter was critically injured by gunfire on Sunday evening while responding to a vehicle fire in Les Pennes-Mirabeau, near Marseille, according to local authorities. The suspect was swiftly apprehended by law enforcement officers following the attack.

Emergency crews had arrived at the commercial zone of Plan de Campagne late in the afternoon on November 1, 2026, to extinguish a blaze involving a truck and passenger vehicles. Bouches-du-Rhône prefect Jacques Witkowski explained that the responding personnel were suddenly targeted with a firearm while carrying out their duties.

The victim, a chief warrant officer commanding the response team from the departmental fire and rescue service, sustained very serious injuries. He was rushed in critical condition to the emergency department at the North Hospital, local fire officials confirmed. A second firefighter was also targeted during the incident, and a service vehicle was struck by gunfire.

According to the prefect, the assailant likely set the vehicles on fire himself before attacking the emergency responders with a shotgun. Following the shooting, the suspect barricaded himself inside a nearby trailer, which the Republican Right mayor of Les Pennes-Mirabeau, Romain Amaro, described as an illegal dwelling.

Authorities noted that a heavy police and gendarmerie presence had already been deployed in the commercial area due to scheduled demonstrations, allowing security forces to intervene extremely quickly. The suspect was handed over to the judicial police authorities and placed in custody.

Jean-Luc Blachon, the prosecutor of Aix-en-Provence, stated that the individual faces preliminary charges including attempted homicide of a person entrusted with a public service mission, destruction and degradation by dangerous means, and illegal possession of category B weapons. A source close to the investigation revealed that the suspect has a psychological profile and a prior criminal record for violence involving weapons, with a court appearance scheduled for December 3.

French Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez shared a message on the social media platform X expressing his complete outrage over what he termed a gratuitous and violent assault against firefighters dedicated to protecting the public. Éric Brocardi, spokesperson for French firefighters, also voiced support for the injured colleague and his team, writing that when those who provide rescue become targets, the republican pact itself is compromised.

Data from the Ministry of the Interior indicates that nearly 1,500 verbal and physical attacks against firefighters have been reported annually since 2021, with approximately three-quarters of these incidents committed by individuals whom the crews were attempting to assist.
