A violent altercation on the eastern side of Nice left one man dead from stab wounds and triggered widespread unrest on Thursday. The victim, a 27-year-old individual, was attacked in the back during a suspected street fight in the Fenoglio de Briga and Louis-Braille sector around 2:00 PM.

Emergency services transported the victim along with two other wounded individuals to the Pasteur Hospital in Nice. Both surviving victims suffered knife injuries to the eyebrow and hand respectively, according to local authorities.

The situation escalated further on the hospital forecourt during the afternoon as dozens of people gathered at the scene. Access to the emergency department was temporarily locked down after an assault alarm was triggered by an individual carrying a machete. Police detained the suspect, and hospital staff remained uninjured.

Nice Mayor Eric Ciotti visited the facility to show support for the medical personnel and praised the intervention of municipal and national police forces. In a statement posted to social media, Ciotti thanked law enforcement for securing the hospital and expressed solidarity with the healthcare teams.

Authorities responded with a heavy police presence as the investigation into the aggravated murder began. Investigators recovered a vehicle on the Voie Romaine containing blood traces and a machete, which investigators believe was used by two fleeing suspects.

Police made several additional arrests during the operation. Four other individuals were taken into custody after a driver brandished a knife toward the crowd gathered outside the hospital. Officers drew their weapons and deployed tear gas to regain control of the area.

By early evening, a total of eight individuals were held in police custody in connection with the violence. The Interdepartmental Directorate of the Judicial Police of Alpes-Maritimes took over the investigation to determine the exact circumstances and timeline of the fatal altercation.
