A shooting rampage in the western Paris suburbs on Friday morning left one person dead and at least four others seriously injured, prompting the French national counterterrorism prosecutor's office to take charge of the investigation. The series of attacks occurred on Friday, October 23, 2026, across the towns of Trappes and La Verrière in the Yvelines department.

According to police sources, the 39-year-old suspect began his assault near a bus stop in Trappes before targeting a gas station, a healthcare facility, and a playground. The gunman fired an automatic weapon at bystanders across three distinct zones. A 26-year-old man was killed during the attacks in Trappes, while another individual sustained severe injuries.

The assailant then moved to neighboring La Verrière, targeting a street and a pharmacy area, where three additional people were wounded. Among the victims in La Verrière was a 12-year-old girl who sustained multiple gunshot wounds and two adult men aged 29 and 49. Local authorities confirmed that the injured victims were rushed to regional hospitals for emergency medical treatment.

Law enforcement officers from the anti-crime brigade (BAC) successfully apprehended the 39-year-old suspect in the nearby municipality of Coignières shortly after the rampage. Police sources identified the detained individual, who was swiftly placed into custody. Investigators are currently working to determine his exact motives and background.

France's national counterterrorism prosecutor's office announced the opening of a flagrante delicto investigation into charges of assassination and attempted assassination linked to a terrorist enterprise. The preliminary legal framework also incorporates aggravating circumstances regarding whether the offenses were committed based on the actual or supposed race, ethnicity, nation, or religion of the victims, alongside charges for illegal possession of a Category A weapon and terrorist criminal association.

Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez traveled to the scene, describing the incident as a very serious event that resembled a murderous spree. Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu also denounced the gravity of the acts on social media, assuring the public that all necessary resources from security forces and judicial authorities had been fully mobilized.

Local municipal leaders expressed shock over the violence. Trappes Mayor Ali Rabeh stated that the gunman clearly intended to cause a massacre by randomly firing at crowds in multiple neighborhoods. Meanwhile, La Verrière Mayor Nicolas Dainville noted that investigators are reviewing the specific profiles and backgrounds of the victims as part of the ongoing probe into potential ideological or racial motives behind the attack.

President Emmanuel Macron expressed deep emotion over the shooting spree, extending his thoughts to the victims and their families while praising the rapid intervention of the police forces that led to the suspect's arrest. Municipal authorities in Trappes announced plans to open a psychological support center to assist residents affected by the tragedy.
