Bayern Munich Faces Dilemma Over Jamal Musiala's Health
Honorary president Uli Hoeness raises questions about the midfielder's long-term health and performance levels.
Bayern Munich honorary president Uli Hoeness has revealed that playmaker Jamal Musiala is dealing with a persistent medical condition that cannot be completely cured. Speaking on the Bavarian network BR24, Hoeness explained that the club is facing a complex dilemma regarding the 23-year-old player's health and future on the pitch.
Hoeness noted that while the condition can be managed through medication, uncertainty remains as to whether the attacking midfielder will ever fully regain his former peak performance. He also pointed out contractual complications, stating that Musiala's health situation is not covered by standard insurance included in his deal.
The remarks quickly sparked widespread discussion within the German club and the broader soccer community. Lothar Matthäus, speaking to Bild, acknowledged that while Hoeness's comments were very open and honest, they likely caused friction internally and with Musiala's representatives. Matthäus added that the remarks might have been intended to motivate the young player.
Despite the concerns, Matthäus defended the club's financial commitment, noting that Bayern rewarded Musiala with a contract lasting until 2030 because they recognized his exceptional talent. He emphasized that market values naturally fluctuate when a player faces prolonged health struggles and that the risk ultimately rests with the organization.
Musiala's difficult road over recent years includes a severe fibula fracture and a dislocated ankle suffered during the Club World Cup in the summer of 2025. Following his rehabilitation, he encountered further health setbacks, including two on-field collapses linked to his medical condition, alongside a more recent muscle injury.
On a more encouraging note, Bayern Munich recently welcomed Musiala back to team training for the first time in five and a half weeks. The milestone marks an important step in his recovery, though coaching staff will likely manage his workload carefully to avoid any unnecessary risks following his lengthy absence.
Matthäus expressed personal support for the player and his family, emphasizing that at 23 years old, Musiala still has time on his side. He suggested that the player use the public critique as fuel for his comeback, aiming to prove doubters wrong and return to the highest level of competitive soccer.
