Fox Nation to Air Ads for Chris Harrison Dating Show on ABC Stations
The promotional campaign for the new series has sparked legal pushback from Warner Bros. Television.
Fox Nation is moving forward with plans to air promotional spots for its upcoming dating series, "The Vow," on local ABC stations across several major U.S. markets. The new show, hosted by Chris Harrison, who previously spent 25 seasons as the face of ABC's "The Bachelor," is scheduled to debut on the Fox News Media streaming service on November 11.
The promotional campaign is slated to appear in local ad inventory in markets including New York City, Los Angeles, Chicago, and Dallas. These advertisements are expected to run during prime-time programming, potentially appearing alongside popular ABC content such as "Grey's Anatomy." The move to purchase local ad slots is a strategic tactic often used by networks to bypass the standard refusal of rival stations to air commercials that promote competing programs.
The rollout of these promos follows a formal cease-and-desist letter sent by Warner Bros. Television, the producer of "The Bachelor," on September 18. In the letter, Warner Bros. alleged that the marketing for "The Vow" constitutes an attempt to capitalize on its intellectual property. The production company stated that while it does not object to the release of a dating show hosted by Mr. Harrison, it believes the current promotional materials rely too heavily on the imagery and goodwill of "The Bachelor" franchise.
Fox Nation responded to the legal challenge on September 24, rejecting the claims made by Warner Bros. The streaming service characterized the cease-and-desist letter as an attempt to stifle competition rather than a legitimate effort to protect trademark or copyright interests. Fox News Media has declined to provide further comment on the ongoing dispute.
The use of local ad inventory to challenge a rival network is a practice with historical precedent in the television industry. In previous years, networks such as the CW and TNT have utilized similar strategies to draw viewers away from established programs on competing channels. By securing ad time on local affiliates, companies can effectively place their messaging directly in front of an audience that is already engaged with a competitor's schedule.
As the November 11 premiere date approaches, the conflict highlights the intense competition for viewership within the reality dating genre. Despite the legal friction between the two media entities, the promotional spots for "The Vow" continue to feature imagery, such as rose petals, that viewers have long associated with the format of "The Bachelor."
