The San Francisco 49ers' undefeated run came to an end on Sunday at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, as the Atlanta Falcons secured a 29-20 victory to hand the visitors their first loss of the 2026 NFL season. Entering the Week 7 matchup at 6-0, the injury-depleted 49ers struggled with discipline and turnovers, committing four giveaways and seven penalties that ultimately derailed their afternoon in Atlanta.

San Francisco initially built a promising 14-3 lead, bolstered by a 1-yard rushing touchdown from star running back Christian McCaffrey and a 30-yard scoring run by rookie Kaelon Black in the opening quarter. However, the momentum shifted when McCaffrey exited the game in the first half due to a thigh injury. Although McCaffrey returned to start the second half, finishing with 39 rushing yards and six receptions for 61 yards, the 49ers' offense lost its rhythm.

Falcons quarterback Michael Penix Jr. delivered a poised performance, completing 23 of 30 passes for 192 yards and three touchdowns without committing a turnover. Penix connected with tight end Kyle Pitts for a crucial 5-yard score in the third quarter, which helped propel Atlanta to a 19-14 lead. Bijan Robinson also anchored the offense, contributing 122 yards from scrimmage to keep the chains moving against a shorthanded San Francisco defense missing pass rusher Nick Bosa.

San Francisco played without several key contributors, particularly at wide receiver, where injuries to Mike Evans and Deebo Samuel left quarterback Brock Purdy relying on deeper depth options. Purdy finished 27-of-40 passing for 288 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions. Tight end George Kittle led the 49ers with eight catches for 88 yards, but his fumble on a late-game reception effectively sealed the victory for Atlanta.

Atlanta's defense capitalized on the 49ers' mistakes throughout the contest. Rookie linebacker Kendal Daniels intercepted Purdy in the fourth quarter, halting a crucial San Francisco drive, while edge rusher Za'Darius Smith registered a key sack on a fourth-down stop. Despite missing the extra point on a late 1-yard touchdown pass to fullback Kyle Juszczyk that cut the deficit to 26-20, the 49ers could not mount a final comeback.

With the win, the Falcons improved to 3-4 on the season, snapping a two-game losing streak and securing their first home victory of the year at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Meanwhile, the 49ers dropped to 6-1 and will head into their Week 8 bye looking to heal a heavily battered roster before returning to action on November 8 against the Las Vegas Raiders.
