Falcons Hand 49ers First Loss of Season Behind Penix Jr. and Stout Defense
Atlanta secured a 29-20 upset victory over San Francisco on Sunday as Michael Penix Jr. threw three touchdown passes and the defense forced four turnovers.
The Atlanta Falcons handed the San Francisco 49ers their first loss of the season with a 29-20 upset at Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Sunday. Michael Penix Jr. delivered a stellar performance, completing 25 of 34 passes for 213 yards and three touchdowns without throwing an interception.
Atlanta capitalized heavily on defensive plays, scoring 13 points off four San Francisco turnovers. The victory marked a major high point for the Falcons, who entered the matchup following a two-game losing streak and have showcased an up-and-down trajectory throughout the campaign.
San Francisco faced early offensive challenges when star running back Christian McCaffrey was forced to the sideline in the first quarter with a thigh injury. McCaffrey, who opened the game with a rushing touchdown and a soaring leap into the end zone, missed much of the first half before returning in the third quarter.
Reflecting on the physical toll of the game and his sudden exit, McCaffrey told reporters in the locker room, "Man, I have no idea. It sucks because I feel like I was going on a run there, and my leg just died on me. [I] was trying to get it going the rest of the game, but it just sucks trying to play like that. But I know I'll be all right. Just really frustrating."
Before the injury, McCaffrey recorded four carries for 29 yards and three receptions for 45 yards. Upon his return, his production dipped to just 10 rushing yards on three carries and 16 yards on three receptions. The 49ers will look to heal during their Week 8 bye before facing the Las Vegas Raiders in Week 9.
For the Falcons, Penix connected with tight end Nick Muse and tight end Kyle Pitts for scoring passes, before firing a 21-yard touchdown to Drake London in the fourth quarter to secure a 26-14 lead. Pitts caught a touchdown during the third quarter, though the play resulted in a frightening sideline collision involving a camerawoman.
Midway through the third quarter, Pitts and 49ers safety Malik Mustapha crashed into a camerawoman stationed on the sideline after a fast-moving play in the end zone. The impact sent her crashing to the turf. Pitts and his Atlanta teammates stayed with her to ensure she was uninjured and helped her back to her feet.
On the ground, Falcons running back Bijan Robinson contributed 63 rushing yards on 20 carries and added 59 receiving yards on five catches against a tough San Francisco front. The win moves Atlanta to a 3-4 record as they navigate a competitive NFC South division.
