Falcons Hand 49ers First Loss of Season in 29-20 Upset

San Francisco's undefeated run came to an end after a performance plagued by turnovers and critical mistakes.

The Atlanta Falcons handed the San Francisco 49ers their first loss of the season with a 29-20 victory at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. The previously undefeated 49ers saw their record drop to 6-1, while the Falcons improved to 3-4 overall and secured their first home win of the year.

Turnovers ultimately dictated the outcome of the contest. The San Francisco offense committed four costly turnovers, including two interceptions thrown by quarterback Brock Purdy and crucial fumbles by the running game. NFL analyst Kevin Patra noted that the game completely flipped following a fumble by running back Kaelon Black in the first half.

Despite missing his top six wide receivers due to injuries, Purdy struggled to find his usual rhythm. He finished the game completing passes under pressure and throwing two interceptions, which significantly hampered the team's offensive momentum. Defensively, the 49ers also struggled to contain Falcons quarterback Michael Penix Jr., who completed 25 of 34 passes for 213 yards and three touchdowns without throwing an interception.

For the Falcons, rookie Kendal Daniels delivered a remarkable performance just one week after suffering a frightening injury that required him to be carted off the field on a stretcher and strapped to a backboard. Daniels recorded a team-high 11 tackles, recovered a fumble, and secured a crucial fourth-quarter interception to help seal the victory.

Atlanta head coach Kevin Stefanski praised the home crowd for creating an electric atmosphere that rattled the visitors. "Incredible. What an amazing atmosphere today," Stefanski said. "We appreciate that we were finally able to get that W for them today."

The win provides a major morale boost for the Falcons as they look ahead to a Week 8 matchup against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in search of returning to a .500 record. Meanwhile, the 49ers will head into their upcoming bye week with plenty of adjustments to make, specifically focusing on ball security and defensive consistency as they look to get their championship aspirations back on track.
