Fabian Reese Leads VfL Wolfsburg to 2-0 Victory Against VfL Osnabrück
The winger scored a brilliant opening goal and assisted a second to secure the win at the Volkswagen Arena ahead of a top-of-the-table clash.
VfL Wolfsburg secured a 2-0 victory against the visiting VfL Osnabrück at the Volkswagen Arena on Saturday, bouncing back from a recent cup exit and maintaining their strong position in the 2. Bundesliga. Playing before 23,222 spectators, promotion favorite Wolfsburg managed to control the game after a challenging opening half hour, temporarily climbing to second place in the league standings.
The match began with the visiting side showing significant defensive discipline. Osnabrück set up with a compact structure that frustrated the hosts, denying them space in the final third. Despite holding around 70 percent possession early on, Wolfsburg struggled to break through, and their attacking trio was effectively neutralized during the opening exchanges.
Osnabrück applied pressure and had moments to capitalize on counterattacks. A major opportunity arose just before halftime when Niklas Wiemann found himself completely unmarked inside the five-meter box, but his close-range header went straight into the arms of Wolfsburg goalkeeper Timon Wellenreuther.
The breakthrough came in the 30th minute following an error by the visitors. Adrian Beck lost possession near his own penalty area to Fabian Reese, who pounced immediately. Reese drove forward and unleashed a spectacular long-range left-footed shot into the top corner, leaving Osnabrück goalkeeper Jonas Krumrey with no chance.
Wolfsburg doubled their lead shortly after the break in the 50th minute. Reese slipped past a defender down the left flank and delivered a precise cutback pass into the center, allowing Muhammed Damar to score with a controlled right-footed shot into the bottom right corner.
Despite falling behind, Osnabrück continued to fight and search for a way back into the match. Daniel-Kofi Kyereh tested the defense with a central shot, and late substitute Ismail Badjie fired an effort narrowly wide, but the visitors lacked the necessary precision in front of goal.
Unlike previous weeks where late leads slipped away, Wolfsburg maintained control under coach Tobias Strobl. The inclusion of captain Maximilian Arnold and Vinicius Souza in defensive midfield provided stability, allowing the team to comfortably see out the match and prepare for their upcoming top-of-the-table match against league leader Hertha BSC.
