Holstein Kiel Secures First Win of Season Against Dynamo Dresden
Giorgi Kvilitaia, Jonas Therkelsen, and Phil Harres scored to lift Holstein Kiel past Dynamo Dresden 3-0 in the 2. Bundesliga.
Holstein Kiel earned its first victory of the 2. Bundesliga season on Sunday, defeating Dynamo Dresden 3-0 at the Holstein-Stadion in front of 11,617 spectators. The long-awaited win ended a difficult stretch for the club, which had gone ten matches without a victory dating back to May, and lifted the team from the bottom of the standings to 13th place.
Manager Tim Walter's side made a strong start to the match and broke the deadlock in the ninth minute. Giorgi Kvilitaia, making his first start for the club, received a pass near the penalty area and fired a powerful low shot past Dresden goalkeeper Lennart Grill into the far corner. The hosts controlled much of the first half, with Phil Harres hitting the post with a header in the 33rd minute to maintain a narrow 1-0 lead at halftime.
Dynamo Dresden increased its offensive pressure after the intermission and took control of possession. The visitors created several opportunities to equalize, notably in the 55th minute when Kiel goalkeeper Timon Weiner made a crucial foot save against Niklas Hauptmann from close range.
The turning point of the match arrived shortly afterward when Kiel defender David Zec fouled Ben Bobzien inside the penalty area. Hauptmann stepped up to take the resulting penalty kick in the 63rd minute, but Weiner correctly guessed the direction and comfortably stopped the weak shot to preserve the lead.
Manager Walter made effective substitutions in the second half that sealed the outcome. Just seconds after entering the match as a substitute in the 73rd minute, Jonas Therkelsen scored Kiel's second goal with a deflected shot following a cross from Faride Alidou.
Phil Harres added the final goal in the 85th minute, heading in another cross from close range to secure the 3-0 victory. The defeat dropped Thomas Stamm's Dresden side down to 15th place in the league table following an inefficient offensive performance.
Following the match, Kiel goalkeeper Weiner expressed his relief, stating, "We deserved to win. And it's all the more wonderful that it was here at home." Manager Walter added that he was simply satisfied with the long-awaited result.
Holstein Kiel will return to action on Wednesday with a DFB-Pokal home fixture against Bundesliga side Hoffenheim, followed by a league match against Greuther Fürth the following Sunday.
