Erling Haaland Scores Late Winner as Manchester City Edges RB Leipzig

Manchester City secured a thrilling 3-2 victory in the Champions League thanks to Erling Haaland's decisive late goal in Germany.

Erling Haaland delivered a late winner to secure a dramatic 3-2 victory for Manchester City against RB Leipzig in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday. The Norwegian striker scored 12 minutes from time, sliding home from an Elliot Anderson low cross to continue his formidable goalscoring record against the Bundesliga side and return manager Enzo Maresca's team to winning ways.

The match in Germany ebbed and flowed with high intensity as City took the lead twice only to be pegged back by the enterprising hosts. City opened the scoring in the first half when Leipzig defender Castello Lukeba inadvertently turned Nico O'Reilly's cross into his own net under pressure. However, Leipzig responded early in the second half when Ridle Baku capitalized on questionable positioning from goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma to squeeze in an equalizer from a tight angle.

Enzo Fernandez restored City's lead shortly after with a thumping header from an inch-perfect cross by Iliman Ndiaye. The advantage proved short-lived again, as Antonio Nusa fired a brilliant low finish past Donnarumma on the hour mark to draw Leipzig level once more at 2-2. Despite defensive vulnerabilities that have seen City concede 14 goals in their last seven matches, the visitors found a decisive breakthrough through their captain.

Haaland's late intervention marked his 13th goal in nine career appearances against RB Leipzig, making them the opponent he has scored against the most. Reflecting on the match, Haaland noted that while his touches were limited throughout the night, his focus remained on securing the result. "I think it is the most I have scored against a club," Haaland said. "We need to step up a bit. When we were 1-0 up I think we needed to go at it, go for the second goal and then the third - that's what we have to do."

The victory provides a much-needed morale boost for Maresca's squad following back-to-back Premier League defeats against Aston Villa and Brighton. However, the performance also highlighted ongoing defensive frailties and a lack of control in midfield that have troubled City in recent weeks. Donnarumma faced renewed criticism for unconvincing handling and positioning, while late attempts from Leipzig's David Raum and City's Rayan Cherki rattled the woodwork in a frantic finale.

Maresca acknowledged the difficulties his side faced on the road in European competition. "Tough game in some moments," Maresca stated. "We controlled quite well but some moments we struggled. Champions League, Germany away, it's tough so happy with the three points."

With this hard-fought victory, Manchester City moves up to seventh place in the Champions League league phase table. The team must now quickly turn its attention back to domestic action as they prepare for a Premier League fixture against Nottingham Forest on Saturday.
