Colts Running Back Jonathan Taylor Draws Trade Interest Ahead of NFL Deadline
The Colts' move to trade Quenton Nelson has sparked speculation about Taylor's future despite front-office resistance.
Trade speculation surrounding Indianapolis Colts star running back Jonathan Taylor has intensified ahead of the Nov. 10 NFL trade deadline, following the team's decision to trade standout guard Quenton Nelson to the Seattle Seahawks on Tuesday. The move sent shockwaves through the league and fueled questions about whether Indianapolis is initiating a broader roster teardown after a disappointing 2-5 start to the season.
Despite external interest, the Colts may be reluctant to part ways with their top offensive playmaker. ESPN insider Adam Schefter reported on "The Pat McAfee Show" that Colts principal owner and chief executive Carlie Irsay-Gordon does not want to trade the 27-year-old running back. Schefter noted that while Indianapolis appears open to dealing other established contributors—such as defensive tackle DeForest Buckner, receiver Josh Downs, and defensive lineman Grover Stewart—moving Taylor remains an unlikely outcome unless an opposing team meets an exceptionally high threshold.
Should Indianapolis entertain offers, the price will not come cheap. According to ESPN's Jordan Raanan, acquiring Taylor would require at least a second-round draft pick and possibly additional assets. Multiple clubs have been connected to the three-time Pro Bowler in recent days, including the Green Bay Packers, Denver Broncos, Minnesota Vikings, and New York Giants. Some league observers believe the Colts' firm stance could also be a calculated tactic designed to inflate the asking price before the window closes.
The Seahawks were initially viewed as a potential suitor, but their agreement to acquire Nelson complicates that pursuit. In Tuesday's deal, Seattle sent a 2027 third-round draft choice and a 2028 fifth-round pick to Indianapolis for the veteran offensive lineman. The move not only depleted Seattle's future draft capital, but it also coincided with positive health updates in their own backfield. Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald indicated that Zach Charbonnet and rookie first-round selection Jadarian Price are both resuming practice activities this week as they work their way back from injuries.
Other contenders face their own roster realities as they evaluate Taylor's cost. The New York Giants, who recently placed Tyrone Tracy Jr. on injured reserve, have been identified as a team that could explore a dynamic addition to their backfield. Meanwhile, Denver and Minnesota possess both the draft capital and the competitive incentive to consider an aggressive offensive upgrade before the deadline passes.
Taylor has remained a reliable focal point on the field despite the upheaval in Indianapolis. Through seven contests, he ranks fifth in the NFL with 587 rushing yards and is tied for the league lead with eight rushing touchdowns, alongside 17 receptions for 178 yards. He previously signed a lucrative two-year contract extension in August, with reports placing its overall value between $44 million and $47 million, including $33 million guaranteed.
The ongoing trade chatter unfolds during a turbulent period for the Colts organization. On Oct. 19, the team dismissed longtime general manager Chris Ballard after nearly a decade at the helm, citing a need for greater championship urgency. Ed Dodd has since assumed interim general manager duties while head coach Shane Steichen works to steady the team, which next faces the division-leading Jacksonville Jaguars.
With less than two weeks remaining until the trade deadline, rival executives are monitoring whether the Colts' leadership will hold firm on keeping Taylor or pivot toward a deeper accumulation of future draft picks to accelerate a rebuilding process.
