Colts Wide Receiver Josh Downs Emerges as Potential NFL Trade Deadline Target
The third-year slot specialist could be on the move as Indianapolis weighs a roster reset before the deadline.
Wide receiver Josh Downs has surfaced as a prominent trade candidate for the Indianapolis Colts ahead of the upcoming National Football League trade deadline, as the organization faces pivotal decisions regarding its roster. Following the team's decision to send All-Pro guard Quenton Nelson to the Seattle Seahawks, Indianapolis has signaled to rival franchises that it is open for business, placing several notable contributors squarely in trade discussions.
ESPN league insider Adam Schefter recently identified Downs as a player who could potentially change uniforms, grouping him alongside defensive standouts DeForest Buckner and Grover Stewart as candidates who might be dealt. The Athletic's Daniel Popper further elevated the receiver's market profile, ranking Downs ninth overall on his trade board as playoff contenders look to bolster their passing attacks with proven interior separators.
Downs is currently playing out the final year of his rookie contract, making him an affordable and enticing target for organizations seeking pass-catching help without long-term salary cap commitments. Interim general manager Ed Dodds must decide whether to negotiate an extension or trade the receiver for draft capital. That choice comes on the heels of Indianapolis committing significant resources to the wide receiver room earlier this year, when the front office signed Alec Pierce to a four-year, $114 million contract extension.
Selected in the third round of the 2023 NFL Draft out of the University of North Carolina, the 5-foot-9, 171-pound wideout made an immediate impression as a rookie. Downs established a Colts rookie record for receptions by a slot receiver when he caught 68 passes for 771 yards and two touchdowns in 2023. He followed that up with a productive 2024 campaign, hauling in 72 receptions for 803 yards and five scores while lining up inside on more than 74 percent of his career offensive snaps.
Despite his track record of route-running precision, the Colts' passing attack has struggled to generate steady momentum this season. Working alongside quarterback Daniel Jones, who has faced difficulties finding rhythm while recovering from an Achilles tear, Downs has endured reduced volume in recent games. In a 16-10 loss to the Minnesota Vikings, Downs caught two passes for 18 yards, and he has found himself competing for targets in an offense that also added veteran Keenan Allen to the depth chart.
While trade speculation has engulfed multiple Indianapolis stars, the team's willingness to part with assets has its limits. Star running back Jonathan Taylor has also circulated in rumors, but Schefter noted on "The Pat McAfee Show" that the Colts' ownership group, led by Carlie Irsay-Gordon, does not want to trade the former rushing champion. Unlike Taylor, whose departure ownership opposes, Downs represents a much more straightforward trade asset because of his expiring contract and slot specialization.
With the Colts sitting at 2-4 and facing an uphill climb in the standings, the front office has only a few weeks to determine its direction before the early November deadline. Unless Indianapolis can orchestrate an immediate winning streak to climb back into postseason contention, the front office appears well-positioned to cash in on Downs rather than risk losing him in free agency.
