Chelsea Prioritizes New Contract for Defender Levi Colwill

The club aims to secure the long-term future of the homegrown star amid persistent interest from Liverpool and other Premier League rivals.

Chelsea is preparing to open contract extension discussions with defender Levi Colwill in 2027, signaling a strategic move to retain one of the club's most prominent academy graduates. Despite the 23-year-old being under contract until 2029, with an additional club option to extend, the organization intends to reward his recent development and solidify his role as a cornerstone of the squad under manager Xabi Alonso.

Colwill has emerged as a vital component of the Chelsea first team since his breakthrough in 2023. His progression follows successful loan spells at Huddersfield Town and Brighton & Hove Albion, the latter of which led to significant interest from Brighton in a permanent transfer. Chelsea, however, has consistently maintained that the England international is not for sale, viewing him as a central figure in their long-term project.

Liverpool remains a primary suitor for the defender, as the Anfield club continues to evaluate long-term options to eventually succeed captain Virgil van Dijk. While reports indicate that Liverpool still holds a strong admiration for Colwill, Chelsea has shown no willingness to entertain transfer talks. The club's ownership group, BlueCo, has emphasized a commitment to the Cobham academy, prioritizing the development and retention of homegrown talent over generating immediate transfer revenue.

The decision to prioritize a new deal for Colwill reflects a broader organizational focus on securing key personnel. Alongside Colwill, fellow academy graduate Josh Acheampong is also in line for a new contract, highlighting the club's dedication to rewarding top-performing players. These efforts are designed to prevent the uncertainty that often attracts interest from rival clubs, including previous inquiries from Tottenham and ongoing monitoring by Real Madrid.

After missing the majority of the previous season due to an anterior cruciate ligament injury, Colwill has returned to full fitness and has played an essential role during the early months of Xabi Alonso’s tenure. His ability to play out from the back and his composure at the highest level of competition have further solidified his status as an elite young defender in the Premier League.

While the proposed contract extension is not expected to be finalized immediately, the club is moving to address the situation well in advance of his current deal's expiration. By initiating these discussions, Chelsea aims to reinforce its commitment to its homegrown core and ensure that Colwill remains a fixture at Stamford Bridge for the foreseeable future, effectively countering the persistent interest from domestic and European competitors.
