Kai Havertz Fires Arsenal to Historic 1-0 Victory Over Liverpool at Anfield
Arsenal secured their first away league win against Liverpool since 2012, moving three points clear at the top of the Premier League standings.
Arsenal secured a landmark 1-0 victory over Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday, thanks to a 16th-minute goal from Kai Havertz. Capitalizing on a loose pass from Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker, Havertz netted the decisive strike that handed Mikel Arteta's side their first away league win at Anfield since 2012.
The triumph moves Arsenal three points clear at the summit of the Premier League standings. Despite intense pressure from the hosts throughout the remainder of the match, the Gunners maintained their defensive composure to preserve the clean sheet.
Liverpool responded strongly to falling behind, creating several scoring opportunities during a frantic first-half spell. Florian Wirtz hit the crossbar with a free-kick, and Alexis Mac Allister headed an effort just over the bar. However, Liverpool failed to record a single shot on target for the first time in a Premier League match at Anfield since records began in the 2003-04 season.
Controversy surrounded a first-half penalty appeal when Liverpool striker Alexander Isak had his shirt pulled by Jurriën Timber inside the penalty area. Referee Andy Madley and the video assistant referee dismissed the protests, leaving Liverpool players and coaching staff frustrated.
Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk voiced his displeasure after the final whistle regarding the missed penalty call. "We have 50 cameras. Why does he have to complain when there are so many cameras? Everyone has seen it," Van Dijk stated.
Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola echoed his player's frustrations, arguing that Isak was penalized for staying on his feet instead of diving. "The Alex one is a clear penalty. You hold the shirt, we can all see that he holds the shirt. Because he doesn't go to the floor, you are not going to call the penalty," Iraola said.
Despite the disappointing result and dropping nine points behind the league leaders, Iraola praised his team's effort and resilience following the early setback. With the Premier League season still in its early stages, Arsenal's historic defensive masterclass has established them as early pace-setters in the title race.
