Bethesda Game Studios has officially unveiled the title for its highly anticipated sequel to the popular role-playing game Skyrim. During a video presentation commemorating the studio's 40th anniversary on November 3, director Todd Howard announced that the game will be titled The Elder Scrolls VI: Sentinel. The reveal ends years of speculation regarding the project, which was first teased at E3 in 2018.

The subtitle, Sentinel, refers to a major city located on the northwest coast of the province of Hammerfell, situated along the Iliac Bay. The announcement video included a cryptic passage attributed to a fictional Moth Priest named Yazar, dated 4E 206. The text reads, "The scroll offered only a shimmer, a veil thinly lifted to my eyes. A future lost. A victory undone. Sands of time scattered by fate." This reference to Hammerfell and the mention of lost futures have sparked significant discussion among fans regarding the game's potential narrative themes.

The confirmation of the title follows several months of rumors and industry speculation. In August, Xbox CEO Asha Sharma teased the subtitle on social media by posting a series of eight asterisks, which fans correctly identified as the letter count for "Sentinel." The leak was further bolstered by reports from earlier this year, including a social media interaction involving former Bethesda writer Michael Kirkbride, who appeared to confirm the name when prompted by a fan.

Despite the excitement surrounding the title reveal, Bethesda has cautioned that the game is still in development and that further information will not be available for some time. While the studio confirmed that the game is in a playable state, industry reports suggest that a release is likely at least two years away. Bethesda noted on social media that while it was pleased to share the name and location, the team remains focused on the ongoing development process.

The decision to announce the game as early as 2018 was reportedly intended to help manage public perception following the launch of Fallout 76. Since that initial teaser, the studio has remained largely silent, leading to a long period of anticipation for fans of the franchise. The province of Hammerfell, the ancestral home of the Redguards, has appeared in previous titles such as The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall and The Elder Scrolls Online, but the upcoming game is expected to explore the region on a much larger scale.

The political landscape of Hammerfell, which famously separated from the Empire following the Great War, is expected to serve as a compelling backdrop for the new entry. As players look forward to future updates, likely at upcoming industry showcases, the reveal of the title and setting provides the first concrete details in years, confirming that the next chapter in the Tamriel saga is actively moving forward.
