A group of Australian fishermen experienced an unusual encounter off the coast of South Australia when they spotted a kangaroo struggling in the water nearly two miles from shore. The crew quickly intervened to rescue the exhausted marsupial, providing it with a safe ride back to land.

Jake Murray and his fellow crewmates were out on Boston Bay near Port Lincoln when skipper Ryan Smith noticed something unexpected bobbing in the water. Initially skeptical, the crew doubled back to investigate and confirmed it was a kangaroo swimming far out in the bay. The male marsupial was estimated to be roughly two miles offshore and appeared heavily waterlogged and fatigued from swimming for an extended period.

Recognizing the animal was in distress, the crew lowered the vessel's sea door to water level to reach down and lift it aboard. Murray, a farmer and diver accustomed to local wildlife, held the kangaroo close to keep its powerful legs under control and help it remain calm. According to Murray, the animal seemed relieved to accept the help, appearing almost as though it was taking a nap while cradled on the boat.

While local residents are accustomed to seeing kangaroos near beaches and shallow waters, finding one in the middle of the bay caught the fishermen completely by surprise. The rescue was aided by unusually calm water conditions, which made spotting the struggling animal possible. Once the boat returned to shore, the kangaroo rested on the beach for a short time before hopping away.

In separate regional news, Port Lincoln is also preparing to host the return of the Rock the Bay music festival this summer. Part of the broader Tunarama Festival scheduled for January 2027, the live music event will feature major Australian acts including Peking Duk, Ball Park Music, and Thirsty Merc at Centenary Oval.

Organizers noted that the festival brings popular live entertainment to the Eyre Peninsula, offering visitors a combination of coastal celebrations, local seafood, and music over the weekend. Meanwhile, sports fans are tracking other regional competitions, including upcoming AFL Women's matches featuring the Port Lincoln-connected teams and local draft developments.
