South Africa Defeats Australia in Cape Town to Win Test Series
The Proteas secured a 176-run victory on the final day at Newlands to claim the series 2-1 and reclaim the top spot in the ICC Test rankings.
South Africa defeated Australia by 176 runs on the fifth day of the third Test at Newlands in Cape Town, securing a 2-1 series victory and moving above their opponents in the ICC World Test Championship standings. Defending champions South Africa bowled out Australia for 111 in the fourth innings after setting a target of 288 runs.
The final day collapse began with a stunning new-ball spell from South African pace spearhead Kagiso Rabada. Rabada removed Matt Renshaw for a golden duck with the first ball of the innings and trapped Marnus Labuschagne leg before wicket three balls later. He finished his early burst by dismissing Travis Head, reducing the visitors to 22 for 3.
Off-spinner Simon Harmer then capitalized on the deteriorating last-day pitch, recording career-best figures of 6 for 16 from 21.1 overs and 10 for 120 in the match. Harmer dismantled the middle and lower order, leaving Australia struggling at 60 for 7 by lunch. Despite a resilient rearguard effort from Australian captain Pat Cummins and Nathan Lyon, who top-scored with 33, the innings folded quickly in the afternoon session.
The result significantly shakes up the top of the 2025-27 World Test Championship table. South Africa improved their win percentage to 71.43 with five wins from seven matches, moving into second place. Meanwhile, Australia dropped from 75.00 to 69.23 percentage points, falling to third place in the standings. New Zealand currently holds the top position.
The series victory marks a remarkable turnaround for South Africa after they lost the opening match by 214 runs in Durban. The hosts bounced back by winning the second Test by an innings and 31 runs in Gqeberha before sealing the series in Cape Town. In addition to their WTC standings boost, the triumph returns South Africa to the number one position in the ICC Test team rankings for the first time since January 2016.
For Australia, the defeat at Newlands adds another challenging chapter to their history at the Cape Town venue, where the team previously faced controversy during their 2018 tour. The reigning side has now suffered four defeats in their past seven Tests, prompting questions as their squad shows signs of transition. Australia's next assignment involves a home series against New Zealand before they travel to India for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
