Alex Eala Falls to Diana Shnaider in Hard-Fought Pan Pacific Open Quarterfinal
Filipina tennis star Alex Eala was eliminated from the WTA 500 tournament in Tokyo after a grueling three-set match against Russia's Diana Shnaider.
Filipina tennis standout Alex Eala bowed out of the Women's Tennis Association 500 Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo, Japan, following a hard-fought three-set loss to Russia's Diana Shnaider in the quarterfinals on Friday, October 30, 2026.
The encounter marked the second meeting between the two competitors in as many weeks, following Shnaider's straight-sets victory in the Round of 16 at the Ningbo Open in China. However, the Tokyo matchup proved significantly more competitive, with Eala starting strong by dominating the opening set 6-2.
The momentum shifted in the second set as both players battled through an intense frame that required a tiebreak. Shnaider ultimately secured the set 7-6 (7-5) to force a deciding third set.
During the final set, Eala took an early advantage before Shnaider claimed three consecutive games to build a 3-1 lead. The players traded games before Shnaider pulled away to close out the set 6-4 and clinch the match.
Midway through the third set, Eala called for a medical timeout to evaluate discomfort in her left foot. Despite the loss, analysts noted substantial improvements in Eala's serve throughout the tournament in Tokyo.
Reflecting on the intensity of the contest, Shnaider offered high praise for her opponent's performance during her post-match interview. "Yeah, honestly, I feel like this match deserved to be a final," Shnaider said, describing the high quality of play from both sides.
Shnaider added that she had to constantly remind herself to fight for every point under demanding conditions. "It was an insane level of tennis from both of us. I didn't believe that I would be able to pull the death wind off, you know, because she played insane, but I was just trying to keep reminding myself to keep fighting for every point," she stated.
With Eala no longer able to qualify for the WTA Finals, the 21-year-old will conclude her 2026 season at an upcoming WTA 250 event in Hong Kong. She joins a formidable player field that features Leylah Fernandez, Maria Sakkari, and Jasmine Paolini.
