2026 TCS New York City Marathon Sets Record With Over 61,000 Finishers
The 50th anniversary of the iconic five-borough course saw historic participation numbers and thrilling elite victories.
The 2026 TCS New York City Marathon concluded on Sunday, November 1, marking a historic milestone as the world’s largest marathon for the third consecutive year. With 61,146 runners crossing the finish line, the event set a new record for the highest number of finishers in the history of the race. The day celebrated the 50th anniversary of the five-borough course, which winds through Staten Island, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, and Manhattan before ending in Central Park.
In the elite men’s division, Swedish runner Andreas Almgren secured a victory in his marathon debut, finishing with a time of 2:06:01. Almgren pulled away in the final mile to edge out Italy’s Yemaneberhan Crippa, who finished in 2:06:14, and Kamohelo Mofolo of Lesotho, who took third in 2:06:26. Almgren’s win was particularly notable as he became the first athlete to win the race in his debut since 2010.
The women’s elite race featured a tightly contested finish, with Kenya’s Sheila Chepkirui reclaiming the title she previously won in 2024. Chepkirui crossed the line in 2:24:36, narrowly defeating American runner Jessica McClain, who finished in 2:24:42. Defending champion Hellen Obiri, also of Kenya, rounded out the podium with a time of 2:24:43. McClain’s second-place performance marked the best finish by an American woman in the event since 2018.
The professional wheelchair divisions were dominated by Swiss athletes. Marcel Hug extended his record for the men’s wheelchair division by capturing his eighth title with a time of 1:28:14, finishing just one second ahead of American Daniel Romanchuk. In the women’s wheelchair race, Catherine Debrunner delivered a commanding performance, winning by more than eight minutes with a time of 1:40:02.
Beyond the elite competition, the marathon maintained its reputation as a massive community event, drawing an estimated two million spectators. This year’s race introduced new Para Athletic categories, allowing athletes with various disabilities to compete for podium placements. The event also saw significant charitable success, with organizers announcing that they had surpassed their $100 million fundraising goal ahead of the race, benefiting over 670 nonprofit organizations.
The atmosphere across the city remained festive throughout the day, with participants navigating the 26.2-mile route under sunny skies and mild temperatures. Notable figures, including actors, athletes, and media personalities, joined the tens of thousands of amateur runners. As the final participants crossed the finish line well after dark, the 2026 edition solidified its place as a landmark celebration of endurance, community, and the resilience of the city.
