NYC Marathon Prepares for Record 60,000 Runners on 50th Anniversary
The world's largest marathon returns across all five boroughs with expanded events, celebrity participants, and a slate of new corporate sponsors.
The TCS New York City Marathon is gearing up for its milestone 50th anniversary celebration on November 1, boasting a record-breaking field of 60,000 runners. Organized by the parent nonprofit New York Road Runners, the historic event continues to be the largest marathon in the world, following a previous record of 59,226 finishers last year.
Originally started in 1970 with just 127 runners who paid a $1 entry fee in Central Park, the race expanded to span all five boroughs in 1976. Today, entry fees range from $255 for NYRR members to $358 for non-U.S. residents. Juliette Morris, NYRR chief marketing and digital officer, noted that a major out-of-home marketing campaign will support both the race and a 'Trailblazers' initiative honoring original organizers Ted Corbitt, George Hirsch, Fred Lebow, and George Spitz.
To celebrate the golden anniversary, organizers launched '50 Years Through the Five Boroughs,' a four-day activation at Grand Central Terminal's Vanderbilt Hall. The interactive experience features a course replica and borough-themed activations tied to corporate sponsors such as TCS, GetYourGuide, Justworks, Volvo, and Shake Shack.
The commercial side of the marathon has also drawn a half-dozen new corporate patrons. Geico has joined as the official insurance sponsor, deploying a cheer zone installation in Long Island City. Other new partners include Kenvue's Tylenol Precise patches as the official pain topical sponsor, Nanit as the official smart baby monitor, and 1-800-Flowers.com with a hybrid licensing arrangement featuring a special marathon bouquet.
Sustainability remains a central focus for this year's event. Culligan has partnered as the water solutions sponsor to supply 25 filtered water stations, while HydraPak is providing co-branded reusable water bottles to minimize single-use plastic waste.
The festivities officially kicked off with youth events. For the first time, NYRR expanded its Kids Kickoff program across all five boroughs, drawing nearly 5,000 young athletes ranging in age from 2 to 18 to events in Brooklyn, the Bronx, Queens, and Staten Island before concluding in Central Park.
A host of notable personalities and public figures are also preparing to tackle the 26.2-mile course. Among them is reality television star Carl Radke, who is participating in his fourth overall marathon and aiming for a personal record under four hours. Radke is running to support Release Recovery, a New York-based community foundation that provides addiction and mental health services.
Race-day coverage will be broadcast locally by WABC-TV and nationally on ESPN2 and the ESPN app, bringing the historic milestone celebration to millions of viewers across the country.
