William Saliba Returns From Injury as Arsenal U21s Beat Aston Villa 5-2
The French defender played the first half at Boreham Wood as Arsenal secured their first Premier League 2 victory of the season.
Arsenal's Under-21 team earned their first Premier League 2 win of the campaign with a dominant 5-2 victory against Aston Villa at the Mangata Developments Stadium. The match marked a notable milestone as senior defender William Saliba made his on-field return from a lengthy injury absence.
Saliba, who has been building up his match fitness following an injury sustained during international duty, played the opening 45 minutes of the contest. Operating in a strong lineup that also featured young standout Max Dowman and captain Marli Salmon, the French center-back displayed an assured defensive presence alongside an impressive passing range before being substituted at halftime in a pre-planned change.
Despite the eventual scoreline, the visitors from Aston Villa started the match stronger. Cole Brannigan opened the scoring just five minutes into the encounter after Alfie Lynskey broke through the center and played him in behind the Arsenal defense to beat goalkeeper Jack Porter in a one-on-one situation.
Arsenal quickly mounted a response and turned the game around before the halftime whistle. Maalik Hashi equalized midway through the first period by squeezing home a shot from a tight angle following fluid build-up play involving Theo Julienne. Moments later, the Gunners took the lead when Marcell Washington delivered a precise cross from the left flank for Andre Harriman-Annous to convert.
The hosts carried their momentum into the second half, extending their advantage just three minutes after the restart. Harriman-Annous capitalized on a loose ball on the halfway line, drove down the left wing, and curled a solo effort into the far corner to secure his second goal of the afternoon.
Aston Villa attempted to claw their way back into the fixture as Lynskey and substitute Jack McGrath tested Porter with long-range efforts and free-kicks. However, Arsenal maintained control of the pace and intensity as the second half progressed.
Max Dowman cemented Arsenal's victory twelve minutes before full-time by playing a clever one-two with Julienne before firing a left-footed strike into the far corner from the edge of the penalty area. Although McGrath managed to pull a goal back for the visitors with a powerful long-range shot in the 87th minute, substitute Evan Mooney rounded off the scoring for Arsenal deep into stoppage time with a calm finish on the counterattack.
The comprehensive 5-2 win lifts Arsenal to 21st place in the Premier League 2 standings with seven points. For Aston Villa, the defeat brings an end to their four-match unbeaten run in the division.
