Where is Joran van der Sloot Today Following Extortion and Murder Convictions?
The Dutch national is currently serving a prison sentence in Peru while continuing to face the lasting fallout from the 2005 disappearance of Natalee Holloway.
Joran van der Sloot remains incarcerated at Challapalca prison in southern Peru, serving out a multi-decade sentence for a separate murder. Though his name became globally infamous nearly twenty years ago during the high-profile disappearance of 18-year-old Natalee Holloway in Aruba, van der Sloot has never been legally convicted of Holloway's death.
Holloway vanished in May 2005 during a senior class trip to Aruba after celebrating her high school graduation from Alabama. She was last seen leaving an Oranjestad nightclub with van der Sloot, a Dutch national living on the island, alongside two other young men, brothers Deepak and Satish Kalpoe. Despite immediate suspicion from Holloway's mother, Beth Holloway, who confronted van der Sloot at his family home just days after her daughter's disappearance, local authorities did not charge any of the men at the time, and Holloway's body was never recovered.
For years, the case remained an unsolved mystery until van der Sloot attempted to exploit the tragedy. In 2010, he extorted Beth Holloway by demanding $250,000 in exchange for information regarding her daughter's remains. After receiving an initial payment of $25,000, he led an attorney to a false location on the island, claiming Holloway was buried underneath a home's foundation.
That same month, van der Sloot traveled to Lima, Peru, where he met 21-year-old business student Stephany Flores Ramírez. According to court records and investigative details, van der Sloot brutally attacked and strangled Flores Ramírez to death after she discovered a computer message related to the Holloway case. In January 2012, a Peruvian court sentenced him to 28 years in prison for first-degree murder with aggravating factors of ferocity and great cruelty, alongside an order to pay $75,000 in reparations to her family.
More than a decade later, the United States secured van der Sloot temporarily from Peru in 2023 to face federal extortion and wire fraud charges connected to his 2010 shakedown of Beth Holloway. He entered a guilty plea and finally confessed to the specifics of Natalee Holloway's death in exchange for a 20-year U.S. sentence to run concurrently with his Peruvian imprisonment.
In his 2023 confession, van der Sloot admitted that he struck Holloway on the beach after she rejected his romantic advances. He stated that he kicked her in the head, used a cinder block to smash her skull, and subsequently pushed her body into the sea. Legal experts note that he will likely never face criminal charges in Aruba for the killing due to the country's 12-year statute of limitations for murder.
Despite his high-security confinement, van der Sloot's prison tenure has featured several notable developments. He married Leidy Figueroa inside Piedras Gordas prison in 2014, though reports indicated a pending divorce in 2023. Additionally, a 2021 conviction for trafficking cocaine into prison added time to his docket. Under current court documents and Peruvian sentencing laws, his scheduled release date is set for 2045.
