Driver Arrested After Fatally Striking Pedestrian and Dog in Orléans
The suspect, who was under the influence of alcohol and drugs and driving in legal recidivism, was placed in pre-trial detention following a second crash.
A motorist in Orléans was placed in pre-trial detention following a fatal collision on Sunday, November 1, that claimed the life of a pedestrian and his dog on a crosswalk. According to a prosecutor's statement released on Wednesday, November 4, the driver fled the scene after the initial impact and subsequently caused a second traffic accident later that evening.
The first incident occurred early Sunday evening when the victim and his dog were legally crossing the street. Emergency responders arrived promptly and transported the injured man to the Orléans University Hospital, where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries. The dog also died at the scene from the severity of the impact.
Following the initial tragedy, the motorist drove away and triggered a second collision on the same evening, which resulted exclusively in material property damage. Law enforcement officers detained the driver at the scene of the second crash.
Toxicological screenings conducted after his arrest confirmed that the suspect tested positive for both alcohol and narcotics. Furthermore, the public prosecutor of Orléans noted that the individual was operating a vehicle under a state of "legal recidivism."
After completing a period of police custody, the suspect appeared before an investigating judge who ordered him into pre-trial detention. Judicial authorities are continuing their comprehensive investigation into potential charges of vehicular homicide and driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs.
Investigators are also reviewing additional allegations involving contempt, violence, and rebellion against a public authority figure. The local judicial police service in Orléans is handling the ongoing inquiry under the direct supervision of the investigating judge.
