Warriors Rookie Yaxel Lendeborg Criticizes Luka Doncic After NBA Debut
Golden State rookie Yaxel Lendeborg stated he lost respect for Luka Doncic following a heated matchup against the Los Angeles Lakers.
Golden State Warriors rookie Yaxel Lendeborg made headlines during his professional debut after engaging in a fiery verbal confrontation with Los Angeles Lakers star Luka Doncic. The Lakers secured a 127-105 victory in the season opener, but the game was heavily overshadowed by the physical and verbal sparring between the veteran superstar and the newcomer.
Lendeborg, who started on the wing in his NBA debut and contributed 12 points, spent a significant portion of the game defending Doncic. During a tight second quarter, tempers flared when Doncic drew a shooting foul and exchanged words with the rookie. Lendeborg later received a technical foul after continuing to trash-talk Doncic following a defensive stop.
Speaking to reporters after the game, Lendeborg pulled no punches regarding his shifting perspective on the Slovenian guard. He admitted that while he previously admired Doncic from highlight reels, experiencing his style of play firsthand completely changed his view. "I had a lot of respect for him because I didn’t really watch the NBA much," Lendeborg said. "I just watched highlights and seen him kill people. But being in it firsthand and seeing all the whining and complaining, I lost all respect."
The rookie clarified that his frustration stemmed not from the fouls being called, but rather from the constant complaining he perceived throughout the contest. He criticized Doncic's reaction after earning whistles, calling the interaction weak. "You get the foul call. Congratulations, bro," Lendeborg said. "Then you talk to me like you did something great. C’mon, dog. That s--- is weak."
Doncic finished the game with 28 points, eight rebounds, and seven assists to lead the Lakers. He also had the final word before halftime, nailing an incredible 48-foot half-court heave off the backboard as time expired, prompting him to point and laugh directly at Lendeborg.
Despite the escalating tension, Doncic downplayed the verbal back-and-forth after the final buzzer. "He was talking crazy, but I wasn’t trying to talk back. This season, I’m not trying to get techs," Doncic remarked. Meanwhile, Warriors coach Steve Kerr felt the single technical foul called on his rookie was unwarranted, noting that both players were jawing at each other.
Warriors star Stephen Curry and veteran teammate Draymond Green both publicly backed Lendeborg's competitive fire and confidence. Green brushed off concerns that the rookie might have poked the bear, asserting that Lendeborg should continue playing with the same aggressive mindset the next time they face the Lakers. The two teams are scheduled to meet again on October 30 in San Francisco.
