Walker Kessler Leads Lakers to Opening Night Win Over Warriors

The newly acquired center tied a historic franchise shooting mark previously approached only by Wilt Chamberlain in a 127-105 victory.

The Los Angeles Lakers opened their season with a dominant 127-105 victory over the Golden State Warriors at Crypto.com Arena, powered by an exceptional debut from new center Walker Kessler. Playing without LeBron James, who departed in free agency, the revamped Lakers relied on their new frontcourt addition and superstar guard Luka Doncic to secure a comfortable 22-point win.

Kessler put on a historic shooting display, finishing the game with 26 points after going a flawless 12-for-12 from the field. In doing so, he matched a rare feat achieved by NBA legend Wilt Chamberlain. ESPN Insights noted that only Chamberlain had previously come close to such high-volume perfection, notably shooting 14-for-14 against the Detroit Pistons on March 11, 1969.

Along with his perfect shooting night, Kessler anchored the Lakers' defense under head coach JJ Redick, logging 30 minutes of playing time. He contributed nine rebounds, two blocks, and one assist, proving to be a crucial presence in the paint. His performance helped open up the floor for Doncic, who finished the contest with 28 points.

The matchup carried significant anticipation after a busy offseason for Los Angeles. Following a 53-29 Pacific Division-winning campaign last year, the Lakers needed to address roster departures including big men Jaxson Hayes and Deandre Ayton. The addition of Kessler appears to provide the exact inside presence Redick's schemes required.

Reflecting on the high expectations surrounding the franchise, Redick spoke about Kessler embracing the pressure of wearing a Lakers uniform. "I think he wants to embrace that. I think that's why he wants to be a Laker," Redick said, as reported by Dan Woike of The Athletic. "How you navigate that early on and how you navigate that in your first year, there's no way to predict that because you've never dealt with it before."

On the opposing side, the Warriors entered the season opener looking to build on a 37-45 record from the previous year. Golden State kept its core intact and signed Stephen Curry to a contract extension, though the team played without Jimmy Butler, who remained unavailable due to an ACL injury. Despite Curry's leadership, the Warriors struggled to contain the Lakers' interior attack and fell behind as the game progressed.

Before tipoff, advanced simulation models projected a lower-scoring affair, with the SportsLine Projection Model favoring the under on a 234.5 total and anticipating defensive adjustments early in the year. However, the Lakers' offensive efficiency quickly erased those defensive projections as Kessler and Doncic dictated the pace of the game.

With their first victory safely secured, the Lakers demonstrated that their offseason adjustments could yield immediate results. As the season progresses, Redick and his squad will look to maintain this momentum while integrating their new roster pieces into a demanding Western Conference schedule.
