Warriors Overcome 25-Point Deficit to Defeat Lakers 112-95
Stephen Curry scored 31 points to lead Golden State in a historic comeback victory on Friday.
The Golden State Warriors engineered a remarkable comeback on Friday, erasing a 25-point deficit to secure a 112-95 victory over the Los Angeles Lakers in an NBA Cup group play matchup. Stephen Curry led the charge with 31 points, fueling a stunning turnaround that tied a decades-old league record.
Playing at home, the Lakers jumped out to a dominant start, opening the game with a 14-0 run and later adding a 12-0 spurt. Powered by Luka Doncic, who scored 21 of his game-high 37 points in the first quarter, Los Angeles built a commanding 40-15 advantage early in the second period.
However, the momentum shifted dramatically as the Warriors mounted a fierce response. Golden State answered with an 18-0 run followed by a 16-2 surge in the second quarter. The visitors tightened their defense, limiting Doncic to just three points in the second period.
The Warriors accomplished a feat not seen in the NBA since 1954 by erasing a deficit of 23 or more points to tie the game by halftime. Brandin Podziemski sank a crucial three-pointer in the final seconds of the second quarter, sending both teams into the locker room deadlocked at 53-53.
Golden State carried that momentum into the second half, capturing its first lead since the opening minutes during the third quarter. The Warriors then used another dominant 18-0 run stretching into the fourth quarter to pull ahead 96-80 with just over eight minutes remaining, comfortably sealing their third consecutive victory.
Curry finished the night shooting 8-of-14 from beyond the arc, continuing a stellar start to his 17th NBA season where he averages 28.8 points per game. Podziemski provided a major spark with 21 points and six assists, while De'Anthony Melton added 16 points off the bench and Draymond Green contributed nine assists and three steals.
For the Lakers, Doncic finished with 37 points, seven rebounds, and five assists, though his team ultimately fell to a 4-2 record on the season. Austin Reaves chipped in 21 points, while Jake LaRavia, Matisse Thybulle, and Walker Kessler each added 10 points in the losing effort.
With the win, the Warriors improved to 3-3 overall and 1-0 in NBA Cup group play. Golden State will look to extend its winning streak when it hosts the Los Angeles Clippers, while the Lakers will return to action hosting the Toronto Raptors.
