Virginie Efira Stars in Asghar Farhadi's Parallel Tales

French actress Virginie Efira is set to appear in Parallel Tales, the latest feature film directed by acclaimed filmmaker Asghar Farhadi. Distributed by Good Time Films, the movie is scheduled to arrive in cinemas starting December 11, following its world premiere earlier this year at the Cannes International Film Festival.

Freely adapted from Episode 6 of Krzysztof Kieślowski's The Decalog, Parallel Tales follows a writer named Sylvie, portrayed by Isabelle Huppert. Sylvie spies on her neighbors through a telescope in search of inspiration for a new novel. Alongside Huppert and Efira, the impressive French cast includes Vincent Cassel, Pierre Niney, Adam Bessa, India Hair, and a special appearance by Catherine Deneuve.

Director Asghar Farhadi explained his casting choice for the lead role, stating that Huppert's performance in Michael Haneke's The Piano Teacher left a strong impression on him. Farhadi's narrative explores creativity and imagination, tracking Sylvie as she struggles to write her new book in Paris. When she hires a young man named Adam to assist with daily chores, her fictional constructs begin to dangerously blur with the real lives of her neighbors.

Farhadi described the project as a reflection on reality, manufactured reality, and the contrast between real characters and fictional ones within the same framework. Isabelle Huppert characterized the dynamic as a narrative about an initiation into writing, describing it as both maternal and full of conflicts.

The director brings a rich history of international accolades to the project. Farhadi won Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film with A Separation in 2012 and The Salesman in 2017, alongside earning the Grand Prix at Cannes for A Hero in 2021.

In addition to her role in Farhadi's upcoming release, Efira's recent work continues to gather recognition across the awards landscape. Predictions for the 2027 Golden Globes place her contention high in the Best Film Drama Actress category for her performance in All of a Sudden, sitting among front-runners like Sandra Hüller and Renate Reinsve.

Efira's extensive filmography also features television broadcasts of her prior acclaimed performances. Viewers can watch her in Rebecca Zlotowski's Les enfants des autres, a delicate chronicle about blended families and the nuances of stepmotherhood that premiered in competition at the Venice Film Festival, as well as Jean-Pierre Améris's comedy A Families for Rent alongside Benoît Poelvoorde.
