Valencia CF earned its first victory of the season under manager Javier Aguirre by defeating Elche CF 1-0 in a regional derby on Sunday at the Martínez Valero stadium. A second-half goal from Nigerian forward Umar Sadiq decided the match for the visitors, allowing them to break a difficult run of form and claim three crucial points in LaLiga EA Sports.

The match began with a slow pace, as both teams lined up defensively to disrupt each other's build-up play. Elche controlled the possession during the first half and generated the most dangerous opportunities. Chilean winger Lucas Cepeda came closest for the hosts when his individual effort struck the crossbar. Elche also suffered an early setback when French midfielder Thomas Lemar was forced off with a muscular injury and replaced by Facu Buonanotte.

Despite dominating the ball, Elche struggled to turn its possession into clear goals against a well-organized Valencia defense. Following a disciplined first half where Aguirre's team primarily defended and looked for counterattacks, the visitors shifted the momentum after the halftime break by pressing further forward.

The turning point arrived in the 68th minute following an Elche set piece. After goalkeeper Stole Dimitrievski easily gathered a cross from Buonanotte, he quickly initiated a counterattack by feeding midfielder Javi Guerra. Guerra delivered a precise pass into space for Arnaut Danjuma, who advanced and squared the ball to Sadiq. Returning from a long injury layoff, Sadiq calmly dribbled past a defender and goalkeeper Matías Dituro before slotting the ball into an empty net.

Reflecting on the tense final minutes, Javi Guerra admitted he was terrified the team might concede late as they had in the past. "I was terrified, as it wouldn't have been the first time it happened to us," Guerra told Movistar Plus, highlighting the importance of the team's resilience. "Knowing how to suffer until the end... any victory in this league is very hard-fought."

Elche coach Martín Anselmi's side pushed desperately for an equalizer in the closing stages, bombarding the Valencia area with crosses. In the third minute of stoppage time, Dituro headed a ball toward Federico Redondo, whose close-range header was brilliantly tipped away by Dimitrievski to preserve the clean sheet and secure the victory for Valencia.

The defeat left Elche players and coaching staff frustrated, pointing to their overall control and shot volume as reasons they deserved more from the contest. Gonzalo Villar lamented the defensive lapse that decided the outcome, stating that conceding on a counterattack in a favorable situation was unacceptable after outshooting their opponents.

Before kickoff, players and fans observed a moment of silence at the Martínez Valero to honor the victims of a recent railway accident in Urda, Toledo, as well as former club figures who recently passed away. With the win, Valencia takes a breath in the standings, while Elche continues searching for its first home victory of the season.
