The Real Betis Balompie secured a 2-1 victory over Malaga Club de Futbol on Saturday at Estadio de La Cartuja during the Andalusian derby in the eleventh round of LaLiga EA Sports. First-half goals from Marc Bartra and Pablo Fornals established a commanding lead that the home side successfully managed despite a second-half push from their opponents, who narrowed the deficit through Adrian Nino.

With this triumph, Betis climbed to fourth place in the standings with 23 points, solidifying its position in the European qualification spots ahead of a demanding upcoming match in the UEFA Champions League against Borussia Dortmund. Meanwhile, Malaga remains at the bottom of the table as the only winless team in the competition, holding just 5 points after eleven played fixtures.

Playing under manager Manuel Pellegrini, who previously coached Malaga during his notable European tenure from 2010 to 2013, the home side dominated possession from the opening whistle. Pellegrini made six adjustments to his starting lineup with an eye on the upcoming continental visit, while Malaga manager Juanfran Funes was forced to make a single change due to a viral illness, bringing in central defender Fernando Calero.

The early dominance from the Verdiblancos translated into constant offensive pressure, featuring dangerous attempts from Ez Abde and Rodrigo Riquelme. Despite a resilient defensive block by the visitors, Betis broke the deadlock in the 38th minute when Isco Alarcon delivered a precise free kick from the flank, allowing Marc Bartra to direct a powerful header into the back of the net for the opening goal.

Just before the halftime whistle, the home squad doubled its advantage. Isco floated another ball into the penalty area, and Pablo Fornals pounced on a loose rebound near the edge of the box to beat goalkeeper Alfonso Herrero with a well-placed shot. Fornals chose not to celebrate the score out of respect for his former club.

Malaga showed renewed energy after the interval, pressing higher up the pitch to search for a way back into the match. The visiting side capitalized on its improved momentum in the 68th minute when an effort from Adam Aznou deflected off Hector Bellerin, setting up Adrian Nino to score his fifth goal of the season and make it 2-1.

In the closing stages, Malaga pushed heavily for an equalizer, nearly finding it when Chupe sent a header toward goal that required a crucial goal-line save from goalkeeper Alvaro Valles. Despite the late scare, Betis maintained control of the tempo, utilizing substitutions like Dani Ceballos and Antony to neutralize the visitors and seal the three points.
