Two Dead and Two Injured in Construction Accident at German School
A tragic collapse at a high school construction site in Gronau leaves two workers dead and prompts an ongoing investigation.
A tragic industrial accident occurred on Thursday afternoon at the construction site of the Werner-von-Siemens-Gymnasium in Gronau, Germany, leaving two people dead and two others injured. The incident took place around noon at the school's expansion site on Laubstiege, where concrete components collapsed in a stairwell area of the unfinished building.
Emergency services responded to the scene with a large contingent of personnel, including roughly 35 firefighters from both Gronau brigades, three ambulances, an emergency physician, local police, criminal investigators, and technical advisors from the Federal Agency for Technical Relief. A rescue helicopter was also dispatched to the location, though it was ultimately not required.
Despite the swift response from rescue teams, two individuals succumbed to their injuries at the site. Two other people sustained minor injuries and were treated, while emergency pastoral care providers offered support to affected construction workers. Mayor Jörg von Borczyskowski visited the location to assess the situation firsthand.
At the time of the collapse, 15 workers were on the site. Because the region was observing autumn school holidays, no students or teachers were present. Authorities noted that regular school operations are expected to resume following the break, pending final clearance from criminal investigators who have taken over the probe into the exact cause of the accident.
The surrounding area was heavily cordoned off to give emergency responders unobstructed access, with the Laubstiege temporarily closed to traffic near the school. The criminal police department is continuing its investigation to determine how the tragedy occurred.
In a separate development in Gronau, customs officials recently intercepted a drug smuggling attempt near the German-Dutch border. A 44-year-old female cyclist coming from the Netherlands was stopped by customs officers last Friday evening. After noticing suspicious foil under her jacket sleeve, officers discovered concealed bags containing approximately 21 grams of cocaine and 23 grams of heroin.
According to Nicole Thomsen, press spokesperson for the Münster main customs office, officers utilized their experience regarding drug importation routes across the border. The suspect, who was found to have an active suspended prison sentence, was provisionally arrested, brought before a judge the following day, and subsequently placed in the Bielefeld correctional facility.
