A7 Closed Toward Hamburg Following Two Collisions Near Kaltenkirchen
Authorities report that driver fatigue likely caused two separate crashes involving a car, a heavy transport vehicle, and a semi-truck.
Traffic on the A7 toward Hamburg experienced major disruptions and a full closure early Thursday morning between Bad Bramstedt and Kaltenkirchen following two consecutive accidents. According to local law enforcement, investigators believe that driver fatigue and microsleep played a role in both collisions, which left multiple vehicles disabled and requiring heavy towing operations.
The initial incident occurred around 1:40 a.m. when a 46-year-old motorist crashed into an escort vehicle accompanying a heavy transport load. Police stated that the driver of the car apparently fell asleep at the wheel for a brief moment. The impact rendered his vehicle inoperable, forcing it to be towed from the scene.
Because of the first collision, the heavy transport vehicle ahead was forced to slow down. Moments later, a 34-year-old truck driver crashed unbraked into the rear of the heavy transport. Investigators suspect that fatigue was also a factor in the second collision, which severely damaged both commercial vehicles.
Emergency responders transported the injured truck driver to a hospital with minor injuries. Both the semi-truck and the heavy transport sustained heavy damage and could no longer be driven, necessitating complex recovery efforts that blocked the southbound lanes completely.
Law enforcement officials initiated criminal proceedings against both the 46-year-old motorist and the 34-year-old truck driver on suspicion of endangering road traffic. Police authorities continue to investigate the exact sequence of events leading up to the collisions.
In addition to the main highway closure between Bad Bramstedt and Kaltenkirchen, the entrance ramp at the Bad Bramstedt interchange was also shut down. Authorities explained that the ramp closure was necessary because other heavy transport vehicles could not safely proceed past the accident zone.
Further complications arose further north on the same highway route when a separate vehicle caught fire near the Bimöhlen rest area after a single-car accident, prompting temporary closures in both directions before southbound traffic restrictions remained in place. Police could not immediately estimate when the cleanup and recovery operations would conclude to reopen the A7.
