Tight Race Emerges in Mangaung as Election Results Are Tallied

Early vote counts indicate a highly competitive contest between the ANC and the DA for control of the metropolitan municipality.

As election results continue to arrive from the Mangaung metropolitan municipality, the political landscape appears to be shifting significantly. Early data shows a tight race between the African National Congress (ANC) and the Democratic Alliance (DA), with both parties vying for control of a region that has faced persistent governance and service delivery challenges. With approximately 15% of the votes counted, the DA currently holds 33.8% of the support, closely followed by the ANC at 33.0%, while the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) trail with 8.3%.

The election follows a period of national government intervention in Mangaung, which has been in effect since April 2022. The metro, which previously maintained an outright majority for the ANC, is now experiencing what many observers describe as a historic moment. The DA, which campaigned on a platform of restoring service delivery, creating jobs, and improving infrastructure, has urged residents to support a change in leadership to move away from what it characterizes as years of administrative decay.

Voter turnout on Wednesday was described as slow throughout the day. While some stations experienced a brief morning rush, queues dwindled significantly by midday. Presiding officers at various locations, including areas traditionally considered ANC strongholds like Batho and Bochabela, reported a calm and orderly process. Some residents expressed disillusionment with the available political options, while others emphasized the importance of exercising their democratic right to influence the future of their community.

The process of counting and verifying ballots is ongoing, with the Electoral Commission (IEC) overseeing the reconciliation of results. Officials have noted that early figures do not represent a final outcome, as results from different voting districts are reported at varying times. The IEC has established a deadline of November 6 for formal objections regarding the counting process, ensuring that any issues material to the final result can be addressed through official channels.

The outcome of this election is expected to be decisive for the future of the metro. In the 2021 local government elections, Mangaung recorded a voter turnout of 43.7%, and the current contest is being closely watched to see if the ANC can maintain its historical dominance or if a coalition government will become necessary. As no party has yet secured a majority, the final seat allocation will determine which political entities will hold the power to elect the mayor and set the municipal budget.

Looking ahead, the newly elected council is expected to hold its first meeting within 14 days of the official declaration of the results. In the meantime, municipal administration remains in operation, and residents have been encouraged to continue utilizing standard service channels for any infrastructure or utility concerns. The transition period will be critical as the city moves toward a new governance structure, with the final seat counts expected to provide clarity on the path forward for Mangaung.
