As the Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) processes the 2026 local government election results, Democratic Alliance (DA) mayoral candidate Helen Zille has signaled optimism regarding her party's standing. With counting underway, Zille expressed her belief that the DA could emerge as the leading political force in Gauteng province, despite acknowledging the challenges of the electoral process.

The IEC reported that the current election results are being processed more efficiently than in previous municipal cycles. By Thursday morning, results from 18 municipalities had been finalized. IEC chief electoral officer Sy Mamabolo noted that the commission had successfully captured over 22,000 results slips, representing a significant portion of the total expected, despite the complexities introduced by longer ballots and increased voter participation.

Zille, who has been a central figure in the DA's recent campaign efforts in Johannesburg, emphasized her focus on the city while remaining cautious about national projections. "I’m anticipating that we will be the biggest party in Gauteng, and we’ll see what we can do with the result after this," Zille stated. She noted that while breaking through to voters presented some difficulties, she felt the party's hands-on campaign strategy had largely been successful.

Early results from the national count indicate a shift in the political landscape, with the African National Congress (ANC) seeing a reduction in its vote share. Analysts suggest that if these trends persist, the ANC may struggle to maintain its historical dominance in key urban centers like Johannesburg. This potential shift has raised questions about the necessity of coalition governments to manage major metropolitan areas.

The prospect of coalition governance remains a significant point of discussion among political observers. Because no single party is expected to secure an outright majority in several key municipalities, negotiations will likely become necessary once the final results are declared. While some analysts have suggested that a partnership between the ANC and the DA could provide stability, ideological differences between the two parties regarding governance and policy remain a hurdle.

As the counting continues, the IEC has implemented rigorous auditing and verification measures to ensure the integrity of the process. Officials have described these safeguards, which include duplicate capturing and independent audits, as essential for maintaining public trust in the election outcome. The final results are expected to be declared by Sunday, marking the beginning of a two-week window for parties to negotiate potential coalition agreements.
