eThekwini Faces Political Uncertainty as Local Election Results Emerge
Smaller political parties are positioning themselves as potential kingmakers as the uMkhonto weSizwe Party challenges established power dynamics in the municipality.
As the 2026 local government election results continue to arrive in eThekwini, the municipality faces a significant shift in its political landscape. The emergence of the uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party has disrupted traditional loyalties, forcing established organizations to contend with a new, influential force in the region. Analysts are closely monitoring key wards, including those in the Durban city center and the Umlazi area, to gauge the extent of this electoral transformation.
The African National Congress (ANC) has historically held a dominant position in the city, currently controlling 95 of the 224 council seats. However, the rise of the MK Party, led by Jacob Zuma, has created a competitive environment that threatens to end the ANC's long-standing majority. Election analysts suggest that the results in specific wards, such as Ward 26 and Ward 86, will provide a clear picture of how voter support has migrated since the 2021 elections.
Democratic Alliance (DA) mayoral candidate Haniff Hoosen expressed confidence that the MK Party would fail to secure a 50% majority in the metro. Speaking from the Results Operations Centre in Durban, Hoosen noted that while the MK Party had shown strength in early returns, the DA has successfully expanded its reach into areas previously held by the ANC. He characterized the prevention of an MK majority as a significant relief for many residents concerned about the city's future governance.
With no single party expected to easily command a majority, smaller political organizations are positioning themselves as essential kingmakers. These minority parties, which collectively hold the potential to influence the city's R75-billion budget, are currently being courted by larger factions. Analysts suggest that the future of the municipality will likely be decided through complex negotiations and coalition building, as neither the MK-led bloc nor the ANC-DA-IFP coalition appears guaranteed to control the council's 224 seats.
The election takes place against a backdrop of ongoing service delivery challenges, most notably a severe water crisis that has left many residents without reliable access to infrastructure. Civic groups, such as the eThekwini Ratepayers’ Protest Movement, have emphasized that regardless of which party takes power, addressing the collapse of water infrastructure must remain the primary priority. These groups argue that revenue generated from water services should be strictly ringfenced to ensure the system is maintained and expanded to meet the needs of the city's 3.5 million residents.
As the final votes are tallied, the focus will shift to the backroom negotiations that will determine the composition of the next municipal government. Smaller parties have indicated they will be cautious in their alliances, with some representatives suggesting they will wait for the final count before committing to any specific coalition. The outcome will ultimately decide whether the city continues under its current leadership or moves toward a new, potentially radical, direction under the influence of emerging political forces.
